Default Why does the local news do this?

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cSRfKk61nG8

Ignoring the political story but why does it take two anchors to tell one story? One will open, say a few lines and then the other one starts in with the first person staring blankly at the camera.

Everyone does this now. Usually it’s a male and a female or two females but not two males. I think it’s a stupid format. It used to be one anchor doing the news, one does weather and a third does sports.

I would think the TV station would save money by only having one person. They only have to talk maybe 10 minutes a night.

Do people still watch local news? I suspect most people don’t unless it is a weather emergency. Or they just watch the news online at their convenience like I do. So their advertising revenue can’t be like it used to be, so why pay two people to tell one story?

Yep. I agree . Some even have 3 people, one sits off at a news desk and reports breaking news and stuff. A lot of the time the two that sit together are bantering and joking among themselves not even reporting the news the whole time..and it seems all over the place these days . Not just the anchor person reporting the news, than weather than sports. Seems the weather girl keeps popping on going over the same stuff like 3 times in a 30 minute broadcast. Usually they are very attractive young woman. Not alot of weather men lately.

And yeah you are right , it is always a man and woman or two women anchoring . Never two men. I wonder why ?

Most news stations have "blocks" at night now. In the mornings it's like from 5-10, then the noon half hour, then 4-6 (and sometimes even 7) in the evening, then the usual 11 PM half hour. If your area does those, that's more than likely why you have 2 anchors, the sports person and then the weatherman.

Is it because you're afraid you'll actually be brainwashed if you watch the 12 pm news?

Sorry, I had to lol.

Hey Dead (how did you choose that username), no need to be sorry, I woke up many yrs ago to the newer onslaught of lies on media and the huge waste of money they blow.....

I get plenty of "what's going on" stuff on my very smart radio programs.....

It’s the OP.

Sometimes I will go to YouTube and watch part of the local news from my hometown to see what is happening. Or just an interesting crime story.

Seems to me that the quality of people doing this work has sort of gone down. I am from Memphis and it’s a small market but we used to have personalities, some of the news people were local celebrities, and a lot of them stayed on the station for decades. A few still do (two that I know that have had the same job since the 1980’s)

I was reading some kind of message thread from two guys who did the local news on Memphis and bemoaned the lessening of standards. Dunno. But the whole two anchor bit telling a story is annoying none the less.

I think the local channels like to make a big deal about their "news team," so having 2 people present stories makes it seem like they're big shots in the world of TV reporting. As opposed to just having a single woman or man sitting there giving presentation after presentation, which in fairness can get monotonous.

But I think too they should just alternate complete stories instead of the repeated back-and-forth between them.
