Arrow Something I heard on the radio (No it's not another contest question) ;)

I was listening to the radio tonight and they were talking about the issue of legalizing drugs. They were talking to a lot of high school students from the area and I was shocked at how many people said they smoked! I mean I knew some people did, but now I feel like I'm the only one who's never lit up a joint in my life! Anyway, they were talking about legalizing marijuana and possibly lowering the drinking age. They all said it should be lowered to about 13 and for pot to be legal to grow for you own personal use. Would you agree about legalizing pot or lowering the drinking age? I'm really interested to hear your responses.....

I voted no to each.

Cigarettes are legal. As a result, in a cig.-smoking household kids can get easy access to them. Though I have never smoked, I remember my mom telling my sisters that they could take a pack of cigs from her supply as long as they paid for them. It was that easy for them to get their smokes.

I feel that this could be the same with marijuana. The parents have it on hand, so there is easy access for the kids. Not a good idea, for either pot or regular cigs, IMO.

Legalized marijuana for medicinal purposes is a different situation. But there are too many loopholes in that proposition. In California you can use the stuff, but you can't buy it. Or is it that the Dr. can prescribe it, but the pharmacist can't dispense it? Or... ??? Strange things like that.

Lowering the drinking age? EGAD!! Bad idea! Too much lack of responsible behavior with drinking as it is. Thirteen????? Holy smokes.

Okay, this is going to be based on my town. This is what my answer will be based on because my whole town is filled with interesting folks.

Cigarettes- Use them only if you're smart. The minute you decide to smoke, you got to take responsibilities. Know that if you develop a smoking habit, you might get lung cancer. Read the warning labels. Don't make a lawsuit against Doral cigarettes because you got lung cancer after smoking for 45 years. Nope. Don't do it.

Drinking- This one is so nice. I can imagine all the 13 year olds going to school gassed because they drunk up all the liquor in the house. Drinking is a big deal in this town. I don't do it, but when I was in school that was all I heard about. Friday and Saturday nights were the two main get together and have a few drinks night. Sunday was probably used to get over headaches or throwing up.

Legalizing drugs- I'm half and half on this one. If it is used for medication such as for cancer or whatever, I am for legalizing it on that part. If it's for the hell of it, 'Come on and let's get high nights' than I'm against it.

Oh yeah, I must mention that my town has a lot of car accidents. Most of the accidents deal with drinking and I know 13 year olds don't drive at that age, but what I'm saying is if they start drinking at that age they may have a full fledge drinking problem by the time they do get their true driver's license. In return, you have a bump up of more car accidents and deaths. It's trouble.

She does have a point...I was walking home the other day and I saw a girl in my homeroom smoking a pack of Newports... no matter how old people are, they still get their hands on drugs, alcohol, etc. somehow. That doesn't make it right, but it's like fi you don't get caught, age doesn't even matter anymore.

I think marijuana should be legalized. I mean, if people want to smoke, let them smoke. They know the health risks after all. But, I think if marijuana is legalized it should be the same age as the tobacco products. I disagree on the lowering of the drinking age, though. In fact, I think the legal drinking age should be 25 years old. That way, more people will be more mature and responsible if and when they drink.

My opinions:

I am in favor of across the board complete legalization of marijuana.

I am in favor of a lowered drinking age. Lower than 18.
