Videotape to film conversions

I have wondered for many years, why it is, when some programs originally shot on videotape are converted to film for current showings….

Weigel’s run of “Mama’s Family” may look the worst of all.

Why in the wide world of sports do some companies do this? I remember about 10 years ago, we had an odd situation where a **game show** was converted to film. And we all know that game shows are not “epic” presentations.

I do know that when Get TV ran Judy Garland’s show sticking to videotape, the scrolling credits were very bouncy and jittery. I assume this is a casualty of converting to digital.

I know that I have NEVER seen any runs of “All in the Family” ever go the film route—-but I think I recently saw “Sanford and Son” and “Good Times” shown on the diginets as film.

Why do they do this???

I say that if a show was originally on videotape, show it that way, and same with film. Show it as it originally was. As far as jittery credits, I suppose they could just show THAT part on film.

I don’t get it……somehow converting to film cheapens the production value.

Any theories?

I believe I pointed this out on my Videotaped Sitcoms thread.

Whenever I see an old videotaped sitcom on YouTube (or on my computer in general), or an SVoD platform, I think they look like they appear to be re-processed on FilmLook, if not being filmized outright, so you can't get that genuine old-school, live, videotaped look anymore. I think these videotape-to-film conversions are because said "genuine" videotaped look may come off as looking rather harsh compared to film, or even FilmLook.
