Johnny Gilbert

Johnny Gilbert has been the announcer of Jeopardy since it premiered in 1984. He has also been the announcer for other game shows such as The $25,000 Pyramid, The Joker's Wild, Tic Tac Dough, Anything for Money, Every Second Counts, and The Price is Right. He has also hosted game shows such as Music Bingo, Beat the Odds, and Fast Draw. Gilbert's career lasted for over 50 years. I decided to start this thread in honour of his 86th birthday.

Even though some of the shows he announced were short-lived, Johnny Gilbert is definitely the dean of active game show announcers, even outliving another master game show voice in Johnny Olson. I also remember two shows he hosted Fast Draw and Beat the Odds. Both didn't last long but Gilbert has had a long and successful behind the mike, even on the show he has opened since 1984 with the words 'THIS IS JEOPARDY!"

And,remember when he was ,in 1980,the announcer for the late Bill Cullen's FIRST Los Angeles-based game show,the regrettably short-lived NBC version of "Chain Reaction"?And let's not forget that he ALSO was the announcer for "Supermarket Sweep"on Lifetime,until he was replaced by Randy West.Go,Johnny,Go!

For those of you wondering why Johnny Gilbert was replaced, it was because his salary became too expensive for the bean counters at PAX, the network that picked up Supermarket Sweep after Lifetime canceled it.

Indeed, Johnny Gilbert has not just eclipsed Randy West in popularity, he has also eclipsed Wally King and Richard Hayes, the announcers for the original version of Supermarket Sweep on ABC.

And in case any of the rest of you are wondering about Johnny Gilbert announcing for "The Price is Right",he did indeed,from 1963 to 1965 when it switched from NBC to ABC-the original version.In other words,he announced for the ABC version.Don Pardo did the NBC version.

^ Indeed. Don Pardo was contracted to NBC, which is why he couldn't do Price when it moved to ABC. Don did reveal a few years ago that Goodson-'Todman offered him $50,000 a year (1963 dollars) to leave NBC to do TPIR for ABC. But Don decided to stay with NBC. It turned out to be a wise decision on his part. He would up announcing Jeopardy, Three on a Match, Jackpot, Winning Streak and other NBC shows. That would not have happened in he went to ABC.
