Canada's CBC Looking to Get Rid Of Both "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy!" - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

TORONTO – The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. no longer needs U.S. syndicated game shows as “crutches” to support its primetime schedule.
“Even today, in primetime television, we have depended on foreign programs like Jeopardy! as a crutch to develop and showcase our own Canadian stories on television,” Kirstine Stewart, executive vp of English Services at CBC/Radio-Canada told Toronto’s Empire Club.

The pubcaster is developing popular Canadian-made shows to reduce its reliance on American shows to draw in the viewers.

“So now we don't need those crutches anymore,” Stewart said.

The CBC is looking to Canadian game or talk shows to fill the primetime slots currently occupied by Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, acquired in 2008 from CBS Paramount International Television.

The CBC is to jettison the U.S. game shows when its current Canadian TV contract with CBS Paramount International runs out.

Like most Canadians I have access to all the American networks on my cable system so it will be no big deal when CBC stops showing Jeopardy and Wheel. I'll still be able to watch them on american channels. As for CBC's original Canadian programming I wish they would put more emphasis into quality and less on quantity!

Agreed! CBC hasn't had any decent dramas or comedies since the 1980's. I'd like to see game shows on CBC that are produced in Canada, even if they are Canadian versions of American shows.

I don't think there has been a good Canadian produced game show since "Definition" in the 70's and 80's! But it would be fun to see new Canadian produced game shows!

I remember 'Definition' with Jim Perry as the host (famous for Card Sharks and Sale of the Century). I also remember 'Just Like Mom' (Catherine Swing is talking about bringing a new version to TV), 'Talkabout', 'Jackpot' (Mike Darrow version), 'Supermarket Sweep' (Tino Monte version), 'Acting Crazy', 'The Next Line', 'The New Liars Club', and 'Super Pay Cards'.

I wonder if Canada will have their own "Wheel" and "Jeopardy"?
