The murders of Roxanne Jeeves and her son Kristopher Korper will be profiled on a new episode of On the Case with Paula Zahn. The episode, "Field of Nightmares", will be broadcast on Investigation Discovery tomorrow night (Sunday, September 21) at 10:00 pm (EST).
As you will recall, Roxanne and Kristopher were found murdered in a Texas field on December 23, 1981, the latter's fifth birthday. A black man and a Hispanic or Native American woman were seen outside Roxanne's apartment about an hour before the murders, which led to composite drawings of them. UM aired the case on April 27, 1994. Thanks to DNA, the male suspect was eventually identified as George Washington Hicks, who was already incarcerated for an unrelated crime. He was sentenced to life in prison for the murders of Roxanne and Kristopher. The last I heard, however, the female suspect remained unidentified. http://unsolvedmysteries.wikia.com/wiki/Roxanne_Jeeves |

For those of you who didn't get to see a few interesting notes about the show. They did say that Roxann had a promising career as a Boiler Machinery Underwriter and her sister said there were only 3 woman in the US that had that job. Her sister was interviewed so it was nice to hear from the family. There was absolutely no mention of her brother which the UM segment seem to focus on (that the killer could have known him). The most interesting information by far was that George Washington Hicks was convicted back in 2007 of Roxann's murder but they are worried he will make parole eventually so he stood trial in March of this year for the murder of Kristopher and was found guilty and received another life sentence. He will still be eligible for parole but not until 2028 when he will be 78.

Another thing mentioned on UM and not mentioned on OTC was the incident in which the killer went to a gas station and demanded to use the phone, but was refused and directed to a nearby pay phone. However, the show did mention a similar thing: A woman living near the crime scene heard gun shots and moments later saw a black male walking by her house, asking for a drink and to use her phone. She declined his request and he went away. Quote:

The show made mention of several things noted in the UM piece. We also saw Roy Baird again, the police officer who found the bodies. He was older obviously, but still recognizable.
Not only did they omit any mention of the woman seen with Hicks, but also no mention of the man who picked him up on the interstate, the one with the 1955 car. I literally cringed when I heard what happened to Roxann and Kristopher. I don't want to get into too many details because it's rather stomach-turning, but Roxann was sexually assaulted. It was stated that Hicks was a serial rapist and that is probably why Roxann was targeted. The investigator couldn't even talk about some of the specifics of the case because they were that gruesome. The UM segment sort of glosses over this, but the Zahn program stated that Hicks had approached Kristopher while he was outside alone, and Roxann was forced to go along with him at that point. Hicks was at the apartment complex apparently there to buy marijuana, so I think this may have been a crime of opportunity. As was stated, it seems to be completely unconnected to her brother Kurt.Lots of mentions about a black notebook that was also left in the car with the other items. The name on it was an "E. Oden". The investigators spent A LOT of time on this lead, which included lots of missed lunch breaks. They tracked down literally hundreds of "E. Oden"'s and eventually found who it belonged to. It was a man who worked at an IBM office and accidentally left it behind while they were moving to another office. Hick's wife later worked in what was the old IBM office and it was theorized George picked it up one day while visiting his wife. It is believed to be completely unconnected to the case. The cap that was left behind had 3 hairs on it. Only one had root DNA on it. The investigator made the tough decision of waiting until DNA technology improved to have it tested. It paid off. One thing I'm confused on: The UM segment stated that Roxann was taking Kristopher to visit relatives in Kansas (2 states to the north) that day. But the Zahn program stated that Roxann had specifically taken the day off work to celebrate Kristopher's 5th birthday with him and they were going to a movie. I must say, while I appreciate Paula Zahn's program for covering the case, I didn't care for the graphics and such. They showed that shot with the gun pointing directly at the camera so many times I wanted to hurl. |
