Default New show on Sherry Eyerly case

I always watch all the "On the Case With Paula Zahn" shows on ID. I was pleasantly surprised to see the story that aired on Sunday was about Sherry Eyerly. I'm sure you guys remember but in case the name doesn't ring a bell she's the one who was abducted on a country road while delivering pizza's. I was glad to see that Paula Zahn didn't bother talking about that ridiculous psychic that the UM case centered around. IMO it took the focus off of trying to find Sherry and was more about trying to convince you to believe in psychics. It did mention a lot about Darrell Wilson which UM mentioned. He was a drug addict and had met Sherry before and even expressed interest about wanting to date her. The first person who alerted authorities to Wilson was actually his sister-in-law who told police he had a truck like the one that was spotted near the crime scene and he had painted it "root beer brown" a few days after Sherry went missing. One thing that didn't really match the UM reenactment was UM showed Darrell living in a house in a rural area (remember the psychic made an issue about the shape of the clothesline poles). In the Paula Zahn show they made a point to say he lived in a small apartment and kept showing a picture of a large apartment building in town. It turned out that Darrell Wilson wasn't the killer and he left no suicide note so my guess is part of the reason he ended his life was all the harassment from the police and possibly fear he would go to jail for a crime he didn't commit. They did say the real killer took him to where he had dumped Sherry's body in the Little Pudding River but of course 25 years later they were unable to find her body. If anyone is interested in watching it, it airs again on Saturday at noon eastern time on ID.

I saw it and didn't remember it was an Unsolved Mysteries case.

Credit to the cold case squad. As presented in the Paula Zahn program, I didn't think the connections to other cases were all that obvious. In one of the murderer's known cases, he bumped the back of a car to get the victim to stop. That's hardly necessary in a pizza delivery case, particularly in a remote area, when the driver is perplexed and looking for anyone to wave them over and claim the pizzas.

The alibi fell apart. The initial investigators were told that Smith was far away, driving a truck. But it turned out he had been questioned in the area the day following Eyerly's disappearance.

A previously undisclosed ransom call was a key in verifying Smith's confession as legit.

I didn't realize they had a credible suspect. Did anyone confess?

Yes. He also had an accomplice but he had died before the killer confessed. Here are some articles:

http://www.katu.com/news/local/12597251.html

http://www.co.marion.or.us/SO/Enforc...issaeyerly.htm

Also a few more things from the Paula Zahn show. First off I don't think I ever realized that Sherry Eyerly was murdered on the 4th of July. Secondly police think that Sherry may have not been the original target. When the killers placed their order to Dominos they mentioned a girl delivery driver that drove an orange volkswagon and that she knew where the address was. Sherry happened to have been filling in for that particular driver that night.

It was mentioned a few years back that she was not the original target. The link about the confession covered that, I believe. I'll have to find it.

And yes, her abduction happened on the 4th of July. Her abandoned car with drivers door open and pizzas all over the ground, was discovered by a father and his two young sons after they had returned from watching the fireworks.

Were any of Sherry's family members interviewed? I felt that her mother's interview on UM was really heartbreaking, knowing that her daughter was gone but trying to find her body. That poor family.

Also, how weird is it that Darrel Wilson asked to speak to a psychic and there happened to be one right there? I know he wasn't guilty and it's terrible that he was getting the heat for it. But I always found that coicidence bizarre.

Sherry's mother was interviewed on the show. She was wearing an oxygen tube, so she is currently not in good shape.

This case kind of reminds me of the one where the guy delivered a pizza to a house and was shot and killed. Can't remember his name but seems like his brother was one of the emts that showed up. Very sad case also.

I think that was Morris Davis. His brother stopped by here and posted recently in this thread: http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/...t=morris+davis

I was not surprised that On The Case didn't mention John Catchings, the psychic who was interviewed on UM. I suspect they decided that discussing the topic was off the table.

Whatever happened to John Catchings? Is he still working as a psychic?

I totally remember setting my DVR to record the Paula Zahn episode, but then forgot about it and I don't think that it ever actually recorded and I missed it. Does anyone know when/if it will re-air?
