The TV Land Awards: A Celebration of Classic TV premieres on TV Land and simulcast on Nick at Nite on WEDNESDAY, March 12 (9:00-11:00 pm ET/PT. The show has moved from the previously announced date of Sunday, March 9.
TV Land's first ever awards show, hosted by Emmy-award winning actor John Ritter, recognizes the best and brightest stars and shows from television's rich history. This two-hour celebration is presented by Chevy Trucks and in part by Revlon. POP CULTURE AWARD This award is presented to a show which has crossed the line from television series to pop culture phenomenon. TV Land acknowledges Star Trek as this year's victor. Launched in 1966, the legendary sci-fi series Star Trek has spawned a billion dollar franchise and a loyal legion of die-hard fans, known as Trekkies. Overall, the indomitable Star Trek brand has launched 10 theatrical films, five major television series, and has become part of today's cultural lexicon. Starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols and James Doohan, the futuristic series follows the adventures of the starship U.S.S. Enterprise whose mission involves reconnaissance of previously unexplored worlds. UNSUNG HERO AWARD This award is presented to a classic series which never received the praise and fan approval it so richly deserved. TV Land recognizes SCTV (Second City Television) as this year's recipient. One of television's most hilarious sketch comedy series featured a Toronto-based comedy troupe who parodied television. Their outrageous skits became legendary and paved the way for future sketch comedy series. Unlike Saturday Night Live, SCTV was a syndicated series for much of its existence and was never able to draw the same attention as NBC's Saturday late-night staple. Among the notable performers included John Candy, Martin Short, Rick Moranis, Harold Ramis, Andrea Martin, Eugene Levy, and Catherine O'Hara. |
