Default Steve Harvey: Game shows are filling primetime's sitcom void

https://variety.com/2024/tv/awards/s...ud-1236042496/

The longtime Family Feud host tells Variety he thinks the reason game shows are having a moment is because they have become the new sitcom,… especially in primetime amid a dwindling number of sitcoms. “I've taken a game show and turned it into a comedy show, really,” he says.

I agree with Steve Harvey on this subject. Because I think primetime game shows are becoming really huge now. Not since the debut of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire in 1999 have primetime game shows made a comeback and soon after Who Wants To Be A Millionaire's debut we started to see primetime game shows such as Fox's Greed The Series with Chuck Woolery and Twenty One with Maury Povich on NBC. But primetime game shows made a swift comeback after being overpopulated with reality shows with the debut of NBC's Deal Or No Deal in 2005 and with high ratings Deal Or No Deal brought back the primetime game show fad and then NBC repeated it with 1 Vs 100 with the late Bob Saget and once those two shows became hits other channels have followed suit as well and GSN did the same thing with their shows and when you look at the general picture primetime game shows are winners of TV ratings replacing the sitcoms. But while this fad may continue for years sitcoms will always remain number one in primetime TV

There’s no “void” - networks prefer them because they’re cheaper and they can control the costs, they can film a bunch of episodes in a single day and it’s a simple reliable formula that gets consistent ratings

I do like games shows, that is some of them but I do wish some of the hour programs could tighten up the speed. Too much chitchat. Jeopardy goes through 60 some questions in half hour. Other other programs contestants answer 15 to 20 and the show goes 1 hour.
