You're right AAAAAABBBBBCCCCCDDD but, back in the 70's when the show first aired the mexicans were so mad because Freddie was a hungarican. That's when they bought in Mando whos mexican and a few others so they would quiet the storm.

I simply don't understand why his ethnic background would make any difference, as long as he could portray the role of a Mexican-American, as the role called for. I think he did a pretty good job of it. The only thing that bothers me is that his role was, at some point, redefined. I've seen episodes in which Chico was a Mexican, and I've seen some in which he was Puerto Rican. Either way, this would've been fine, but I feel that the writers should have avoided the "wishy-washy" approach.

I wouldn't have cared if he was from Mars, as long as he looked that good and was that talented!

Question

BTW, fdam74, I always thought Chico was consistently described as Mexican, but could do the Puerto Rican accent when he wanted to?

If I am mistaken about his role being ethnically inconsistent, I apologize. I've been wrong before, but I am, for some reason, remembering episodes with Chico's aunt, from Puerto Rico, and I vaguely remember some mention, in another episode (I can't remember which one.), in which either he referred to himself or Ed referred to him as being Puerto Rican.

As I'm sure you can tell, I don't have very solid incidents to back this up, so now, I'm curious as to why I thought that, to begin with!

IN THE FIRST SEASON THEY HAD FREDDIE MEXICAN.
TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT THE MEXICANS COMPLAINED THAT FREDDIE WAS NOT A MEXICAN SO IN THE SECOND SEASON HE BECAME WHAT HE IS PUERTO RICAN. HIS MOTHER MARIA IS PUERTO RICAN AND HIS FATHER IS HUNGARIAN. I HOPE THIS WILL HELP YOU.

Thanks! It makes more sense, now, even though it's sad to think that people would be so "up in arms" about something so insignificant. I am happy to say that I don't recall my family (Mexican) having any problems with his portrayal; they were fans of the show.

"Fdam" I totally agree with you! But, back then (mexicans) were up in arms because there was alot of mexican actors available to play "Chico" & they chose a Puerto Rican comic/actor. It happened all the time in the early part of the century when the Chinese people were played by white actors..... There were hundreds of chinese actors available. It happened recently again when Jennifer Lopez (who is Puerto Rican) was chosen to play Selena. There were lots of mexican actresses available but, the companies want the almighty dollar.
