Question How many of us have gone to psychiatrists or counsellors?

As I look over these boards, I notice a lot of people here who are going to doctors and psychiatrists and counsellors, or who have gone to one. Anyone interested in talking about it?

Okay. I've just opened up a whole can of worms....

I've gone to a couple over the years.

I went to a counselor for awhile when I was in 6th grade because I was depressed and I threatened suicide.

yeah, I've been to therapy for severe depression and anxiety, it helped a lot, I shudder to think what would have happened if I hadn't accepted the fact that I needed help. I don't go anymore, and I'm doing ok, but I kind of miss it, it was a good release for me. I'll probably go back soon, just as a precautionary measure.

No, but I really need to. A few months ago, I told my mom that I needed help. She said that I had to stop feeling so down. I never really thought about suicide or anything. I've had members of my family do that, and it really tears up the whole family. It's like the person never existed or something. That kind of makes me sick in a way. The person is worth remembering, even if the person committed suicide.

Just my 2 cents.

Oh yes. Big can of worms.

And no, I don't wanna share my visits with them (shrinks) but I'll just say that I've see oh... *thinks* about 5 or 6 different ones over the course of the past 2 1/2 years.

Councelors? Ah geez, I prolly saw my guidance councelor almost everyoner day throught middle school.

I've seen way too many people who can "help" me. *sighs*

I've gone to counseling off and on. I went in 6th grade, 7th and 8th grade. Then when I got out of high school, I've also done group counseling. I went to a pyschiatrists for a few evaluations and never had to go back. I used to get picked on a lot by the kids in school because of the way I looked. So, I went to the counselor to talk about it. That helped me until we moved to a better neighborhood and things got better. My parents thought it would be a good idea for me to go back into after I graduated because I had no desire to work and I was depressed. So I went, got better and haven't been back since.

I once went to a phsychologist when I was in 6th or 7th grade. I have always been a very quiet kid in school, not exactly shy, but just more quiet than other kids. Well, because everyone else in my class were sort of loud mouths that made me stick out and the teachers told my parents to take me to a counsellor. Every counsellor I saw which may have been I think 2 or 3 all said I was just a normal kid. What the worst thing about it was that I felt forced to go to a counsellor, and I think it should just be upto the person who is going to a counsellor to decide whether they want to go to one or not. I could see having to go to a counsellor for personal issues in life such as feelings of suicide or something like that, but I was always a happy kid and have never been depressed to the point of wanting to end my life. Anyway, since I always felt forced to go to phsycologists, I grew up hating them, so I've never willingly seeked help (not that I need any) from phsycologists since. And, anyway, unless a person is going through something in their life that is very tragic, like a death of a very close person in their life, I don't think they need counselling.
