Default Lucy specials

If you have the money, get the specials that Lucy made over the years, some of them are comparable to her classic series. I watched Lucy meets the President last night and the flood of memories came back as i saw Mary Wickes and Mary Jane, not to mention Gale and especially Vivian get huge ovations like Lucy did when they came out and the audience greeted them like long lost friends. The special was criticized when it came out as being old fashioned, but that was the point ,Lucy had seen the reaction to her 25th anniversary special the previous year and decided what the public wanted was an old show with all the old familiar faces in those classic situations of years gone by. Many other Lucy specials are worth seing, one of my favorites is the guest shot Lucy did on Carol Burnett's pilot for her long running TV variety show. You forget how good Lucy was in her prime. She sings and dances up a storm and that being one of her favorite things to do, coupled with the fact that she's doing it with one of her favorite people makes it sheer joy to watch.

I haven't seen the Danny Kaye special or the Mary Tyler Moore or Cher ones in years. But, i did get the ones with Dean Martin and Art Carney, Jackie Gleason, and some with Berle and Hope. The ones with Gleason were dissapointing, but then again, their personalities overwhelm their characters. The onw with Dino and Steve Lawrence (His opening show) were great as Lucy is somehow always better when she's performing with somebody she loves. The Desilu review with all her protegees at the Desilu Workshop also has many stars doing cameos on it, it also is very good. I liked the ones with Ed Sullivan Berlke and Hope but prefer the ones with people we're not used to seing her with, they are usually better. The sketches on the Hope specials were not always that great to begin with.

Had a chance to watch the Lucy appearances on Password Plus and Body Language again. Lucy is quite old on the ones i saw but she still has the ability to get her clue across. On one of them, she practically threw herself on the floor to get her word guessed. On ET last weekend, Charles Nelson Reiley was mentionning that doing game shows was a death sentence in Hollywood. Lucy was certainly the first superstar to do them, and i think she removed some of the stigma attached to them. As i watch the game show network these days, i often see oscar winners and big time movie stars whom you never would expect to see on this type of show.

LOL! I just said something about that on the last thread!

But I can talk about that for hours. Charles was hilarious on MG and I'll bet it made him more of a household name than Broadway did. He should consider himself luck he had the opportunity. It's not like Match Game was a flop or anything.

Besides...he bad-mouthed Richard.

Another one I just thought of THE PRACTICE with Lucille Ball as Guest and Danny Thomas stars. That is one I would love to have in my collection.

Some of those are available thru Michael Cordero, i got Lucy gets lucky and three for two from him as well as many game shows. I never thought of that, the red carpet interview from the Oscars, wow that would be something. And will you stop thinking there could be a hospital room interview with Lucy, as if she would let herself be interviewed looking like that, unless it was for radio! LOL.

I haven't gotten an e mail from him in a while and i never keep anything so i dun't have it, i think it's Michael Cordero at Empire Media.com, but i will confirm it for you the minute i get an e mail from him, i will post it on every board! in the words of Emily Letilla, never mind, i just found it, empiremedia@lvcm.com, he makes copies of many of her hard to find things like the specials, even her radio shows!
