"Jeopardy!" Spin-off set at Amazon Prime Video

A "Jeopardy!" spinoff is heading to streaming. Amazon’s Prime Video has ordered "Pop Culture Jeopardy!", a spinoff of the long-running gameshow. The series, which comes from Sony Pictures Television’s Game Show Division, marks the first time that a "Jeopardy!" series has been created for a streaming service.

The show will launch in more than 240 countries and territories. It’s a new twist on the classic gameshow and will focus on categories from alternative rock to The Avengers, from Broadway to MMA and Gen Z to Zendaya.

The host was not announced.

“Pop Culture Jeopardy! is its own cultural moment, marking the first time the iconic franchise will premiere exclusively on a streaming service,” said Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD originals unscripted and targeted programming, Amazon MGM Studios.

“With a team-based approach and pop-culture focus, our global Prime Video customers will exclusively experience this innovative spin on Jeopardy! while testing their knowledge on topics that both define and transcend generations.”

Longtime SNL star Colin Jost will host "Pop Culture Jeopardy!" for Prime Video. It marks the first time that a spinoff of the long-running quiz show has been made exclusively for streaming.

The series has been in the works for some time, having been announced in May at Amazon’s upfront.

“Colin’s sharp wit and intelligence epitomize Pop Culture Jeopardy!,” said Suzanne Prete, President, Game Shows, Sony Pictures Television.

“He’s smart and quick, like our contestants, and we know he’ll be able to keep up with them while making this new series his own. We could not be happier that he is joining us for this new journey.”

Pop Culture Jeopardy! moves from Amazon to Netflix, with Colin Jost in talks to return for Season 2

According to Variety, Amazon Prime Video is changing its strategy and is getting out of the game show business, allowing Sony Pictures Television to shop Pop Culture Jeopardy! to other distributors. Pop Culture Jeopardy!, which premiered last December, was hosted by Jost for Season 1. But he isn’t yet signed on for Season 2. “The move comes as Amazon is figuring out its unscripted strategy,” according to Deadline’s Peter White. “The streamer has a new global head of television in former Netflix exec Peter Friedlander, who will likely want to put his own stamp on things. Lauren Anderson, who currently oversees unscripted, has been increasingly focusing on the advertising side of the business as Head of Brand & Content Innovation at Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, while the unscripted studio, MGM Alternative TV, was recently moved under the division that Friedlander now oversees. Meanwhile, a number of Amazon unscripted execs have moved over to Netflix over the last year including its head of unscripted series Jenny Falkoff and head of docuseries Alysia Russo.”

Colin Jost Returns as Host of "Pop Culture Jeopardy!"

Colin Jost has officially confirmed that he will host the second season of "Pop Culture Jeopardy!" after it made a shock move from Amazon to Netflix.

Netflix picked up the second season in October and Jost was in talks to return but those talks have now ended in a signed deal.

“New episodes will roll out in a very un-Netflix way: daily,” reports Vulture’s Josef Adalian. “The streamer that famously eschewed advertising or live sports — until it did not — has decided to drop one 25-minute episode of Pop Culture Jeopardy! every weekday for a full month, starting on Monday, May 11, and ending with the season-two finale on Friday, June 5. Per a Netflix source, this is believed to be the first time the streamer has used a daily, Monday-through-Friday cadence to release an original U.S. entertainment series.” With Season 1, Amazon Prime Video released three episodes per week. With Season 2, reports Adalian, “Netflix and producers Sony Pictures Television jointly discussed rollout options and ultimately decided that since fans of Jeopardy! are very comfortable with tuning in for daily episodes, it made sense to experiment with that sort of scheduling for season two.”
