Scene 1:
(Alex, Mallory, Jennifer, Steven and Elyse sitting in living room. Alex is now age 29, Mallory age 22, Jennifer age 18. Andy joined the army, moved away awhile ago and they haven't seen him since.) Alex: The world is so unfair these days. Steven: Yes it is. I went to get milk today from Adlers' and it was frozen. (frowns) I don't think he realizes how low Nicks' education is. Mallory: It wasn't Nick who froze the milk, Dad. It was Skippy. Steven: Oh, sorry. It's just that Nick was the one who handed me the milk. Elyse: I thought you weren't that judgemental about Nick anymore, Steven. Steven: I'm not. It's just...Alex you were saying something? Alex: Right. The world is unfair, too much hunger, too much cruelty and violence. Just what is this world coming to? Jennifer: Hell. Isn't it obvious? Mallory: I don't want to live in hell. My hair looks like the place. (Mallory picks up mirror and looks into it) Alex: Don't worry, Mallory. You'll fit right in. (Mallory gives Alex evil eye) Alex: Well, I've got to get to work. See you later, everyone. Steven: See you later, Alex. Jennifer: Yeah, have fun going through reports about flying blips. Alex: They aren't flying blips, Jennifer. They're UFOs. There's a difference. (putting on his jacket) Mallory: What's a flying blip? Elyse: That's all very interesting, Alex, but do you think you should be talking about this kind of stuff? The phenomenon is sworn to secrecy after all. I don't think it's such a good idea to talk about a phenomenon that so many people don't want to have talked about. Alex: Mom, that was 43 years ago. Back in 1947, it's 1990 now. Times have changed. Mallory: Yeah, we can talk about flying blips now. Alex: UFOs. Mallory: Whatever. Alex: See you all later. (exits living room) Scene 2: (Alex looking through files on desk. Nick walks in through office door.) Nick: Hey, Al-ex. How's my little UFO friend? Alex: Hey, Ni-ck. I'm good. Come here, I want you to see this photo someone sent in. (Nick looks at photo of UFO) Nick: Looks like a piece of art. I was never that good at drawing heiroglyphics. Alex: Nick, it's a UFO. (takes back photo) Nick: You mean someone didn't draw that? (Mr. Scottsman, a general, walks into the room.) Mr. Scottsman: Ah, what do we have here? (looks at photo) Nick: Uh, we're not sure. I said it looked like a drawing of a heiroglyphic, but Alex says it might be a real photo of a UFO. Mr. Scottsman: Ah, I see. Alex: So, what is it? Mr. Scottsman: I'll have to take it to my lab to get it analyzed. (Mr. Scottsman takes photo and walks out of the room.) Nick: Alex, what if that photo is a UFO? Alex: Then, we know it will affect everyone except Skippy. Nick: Why would it not affect Skippy? Alex: Skippy has such a low IQ he won't know a heiroglyphic from a UFO, much less a UFO from, say, a plane. Nick: You know, you're probably right. UFOs are too complicated for Skippy. Alex: Life is too complicated for Skippy. Nick: Do you think Mallory would like a drawing of one of my heiroglyphics? Alex: I'm not sure. Nick: I'll give one to her, anyway. (Mr. Scottsman walks into the room.) Mr. Scottsman: Alex, Nick, I'm afraid I have some bad news. Alex: What kind of bad news? Mr. Scottsman: That object in the photo that you thought was a UFO, is nothing more than a blotch on the photo from a thumb. Alex: That can't be! Are you sure it's not real? Mr. Scottsman: I'm positive. (Alex runs out of office. Nick follows him out door.) Scene 3: (Alex, Mallory, Jennifer, Elyse, Steven and Nick in living room) Steven: I'm sorry this happened, Alex. Alex: How could they do that? Just lie to us like that? I never want to work for the CIA ever again. Nick: Does this mean I can't look at heiroglyphics ever again? Mallory: Nick! Nick: Oh. I'm sorry, Alex. I'm just a little disappointed, that's all. Oh, Mallory, I have a drawing for you. Mallory: Oh thankyou, Nick. It's...very....interesting. (taking drawing and looking at it) Nick: I knew you'd like it. I personally think it's the best heiroglyphic drawing I've ever made. Elyse: Alex, I tried to warn you about the consequences before, but you wouldn't listen. Alex: I know, Mom. I'm sorry. And, I thought the world was cruel before when I was real hyped up about this whole UFO thing, but now I think it's what causes humanity to lie. People can't deal with the truth because they're afraid. Afraid because they don't know what will happen to them or what will become of the rest of the world if something like UFOs or some other paranormal thing comes out in the open. Mallory: It looks like you gave this alot of thought, Alex. Jennifer: How about we forget all about this UFO thing? We can watch a movie or something to get our minds off it. Alex: Okay, what do you want to watch? Jennifer: ET? Alex: Oh, no. Steven: It doesn't have to be ET. We can watch something else. Elyse: Yeah, we can watch... (looks at Steven for ideas) Steven: Twilight Zone. Mallory: Oh, no. Another old boring favorite show of theirs. (Steven, Elyse, Mallory, Jennifer, Alex and Nick sit down in living room in front of the tv.) THE END |
