What is Artifical Intelligence exactly?

What is Artificial Intelligence? I have been hearing this a lot on the news and online the last several months.

In my understanding, Artificial Intelligence means to create basically a sentient being who can think independently on its own outside the design of its creator. For instance, two examples in fiction, the Hal 9000 in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, the other the Star Trek: The Next Generation character of Mr Data who is an android capable of independent thought.

To create a true artificial intelligence is like creating a life form who can think on its own and has free will. This hasn’t happened yet (which is why I dislike the term). If Mankind can create a sentient being, it would be one of the greatest inventions of Mankind and maybe a very scary one.

A computer cannot do anything outside of what the creator programmed it to do. The ghosts in Pac Man don’t have independent thought, it just moves in a sequence created by the programmer who made it.

So what is Artificial Intelligence? And how far away is Man from creating a human like robot? I know the Japanese are trying.
