Default Alien Marriage Episode - Your Thoughts?

What was the whole point of having the Alien Marriage episode where Vint agrees to marry a Portuguese woman? It was the 11th episode. Vint was already married to Naomi by then which was the 3rd or 4th episode. I think the Alien Marriage episode should have been the 2nd episode after the 1st episode of Vint and the Kids Move in.

I think TBS showed it second, years ago. If I recall correctly, the original airing on NBC had a short segment at the beginning where they flashed back to it.

Alien Marriage was always shown as the 3rd episode of season 1 when I was younger *in the 90s* watching the show.

It always showed Mama's Silver as the first episode, Vint and the Kids Move in as the 2nd, Alien Marriage as the 3rd, and Fran's Dress as the 4th, For this reason I thought Vint was not yet living with Mama in Mama's Silver, I thought he was just visiting

Episodes Alien Marriage and Mamas Silver were filmed before the pilot. The show was greenlighted without a pilot. After filming 2 episodes Vicki had concerns. Without a pilot, it was never explained to the audience how Vint and the kids moved in. Who was Vint and these kids? The original premise was to have Aunt Fran as Mama's nemesis on the show. Rue was hired for that. In those 2 episodes Mama goes on rants that are a bit more extreme compared to other episodes. Vicki also thought Mama was too mean to do a full sitcom. The network worked through these concerns and created a pilot "Vint and the kids move in" and toned down Mama some. The show was then changed that Mama's mother in law would be Mama's nemesis for drama. The character Aunt Fran was no longer needed. However Rue was under contract and NBC would have to pay her so they kept the character in the show. This is why Rue hated playing this character. She was frumpy and had no real purpose. She was hired for a different kind of role. This is why the character Aunt Fran sort of wanders in the NBC years. You will notice in Alien Marriage and Mama's Silver Aunt Fran has a bigger role. The show debuted with the pilot episode. Since NBC had these other 2 shows they still aired them post pilot airing. It is confusing to the viewer without knowing what happened.
Vicki's unease about the show led to all those changes. She never wanted to do it and was talked into it. She was approached about the sitcom during the last season of Carol Burnett but turned it down saying she could never wear a fat suit every week. After many more offerings she agreed if she could bring Harvey as director and Carol agreed to be in some early episodes. Even when filming started, after 2 episodes she was again having doubts and wanted more changes.

A little trivia about Alien Marriage. The woman speaks Portuguese. However her uncle is speaking Spanish in the episode. I suppose NBC figured most viewers would never know. They found an authentic Portuguese speaking woman but finding a Spanish speaking is much easier. Buzz even speaks to her in Spanish and she responds in Portuguese.
