Why Did Rollo Leave? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

does anyone know why Nathinal Taylor Rollo Lawson, left Sanford before the end of the 1st Season,

there was no explanation about where he disappeared to so i thought he ask here.

his final episode was Cals diet part 2

It's a guess, but the producers were constantly re-tooling the show to get it as close to Sanford & Son as possible. Rollo was there, presumably, at the behest of Lamont to help out with the junk business and do the lifting, truck driving and junk picking.

Once Cal showed up, Rollo became ancillary as Cal took center stage as The New Dummy and, as such, Rollo just faded away with the first season stories revolving mostly around either Cal/Fred or Fred/Eve.

The last few shows were a drastic attempt to get back to the original series and, though it kinda felt the same sometimes, the father-and-son element was gone, interest had waned, and NBC had already given up on it. So, while we got to see Smitty and Hoppy again, we never got anymore stories that involved characters like Esther, Clifford or Rollo, and Grady only showed up like twice.

Rollo never had a chance to return. Neither did Bubba, Melvin or any others from the original series. The whole thing just fizzled out.
