Mr. Henton sure seemed like an abusive husband. Mrs Henton seemed like a battered wife with her whole, "Whatever Ralf says is fine with me"

That's the way it was in those days. Men raised the boys and some mothers were put in their place. I would not classify it as abusive without more evidence. I always hated this episode because I was constantly bullied in school. When I would watch the Brady Bunch for escapism and entertainment, I hated the Brady World being thrown into my life. It hit very close to home for me and I hated it. The mother's reaction was the same reaction I saw from parents and teachers which was "let kids be kids." Bullies are very insecure and find someone they think is weaker then them who wont fight back. Today bullying is acknowledged in all the schools. But back in the 70s it was not.

Mrs Hinton's demeanor reminded me of Pat Gimble from Mary Hartman Mary Hartman, always going around saying, "Yes, Garth is right! Garth is totally right! You'd all do well to listen to Garth!", etc.... Always singing his praises cuz she knew she'd be in for it if she didn't
Garth was never really abusive to their son "Little Garth" and he would also encourage him to be disrespectful to Pat, saying, "Garth, NEVER hesitate to let your mother know if she doesn't cook your food how you like it!" Thankfully, Garth Jr. seemed to be sweet and nice, and not following in his dad's footsteps. Which didn't seem to be the case with the Hinton boy |
