A couple of things wrong --

1. The "taping" (really filming) had no studio audience--single camera shows don't film in front of an audience. The laughter in the soundtrack is added later--it's commonly called "canned." The raw footage could have been shown to the cast and bigwigs, and the "too much laughter" decisions could have been made there.

2. I really doubt there was any serious consideration of going to color in 1959--particularly on ABC, which had virtually no color filming until 1962. The statement was made that The Donna Reed Show went to color filming--if that's true, the episodes were never shown in color.

Early color on ABC included The Greatest Show on Earth in 1963, and The Jetsons animated cartoon in 1962. Not much else.

A couple of early sixties animated shows--Top Cat and The Flintstones--were filmed in color and shown in black and white on ABC. The Flintstones went to color airing in 1962.

Of course the toilet tank showing in the first LITB episode produced (2nd one shown) is a well-known first.

I doubt they showed any WT pit stops. LITB was unique in showing a toilet tank. Once and only once.
