Noggin Preschool Streaming Service Shut Down by Paramount

Noggin, Paramount Global‘s interactive learning subscription service for preschoolers, is shutting down, sources tell Deadline. The Nick Jr.-affiliated app is slated to sunset this year, with the majority of its staff let go in the latest round of layoffs at Paramount Global on Tuesday that impacted about 800 U.S. employees.

As Noggin stops taking new subscribers, there will be a transition period for current ones. Noggin predated Paramount Global’s flagship streamer Paramount+, which has been carrying Noggin’s video content under the Nick Jr. preschool brand.

The development comes almost a year after Paramount reportedly explored a sale of a majority stake in Noggin as the company shifted priorities — and resources — to Paramount+ and Pluto TV.

When Noggin began life as an educational spin-off of Nickelodeon back in the 90's Nickelodeon had been dreaming of adding a second preschool oriented channel to follow the Nick Jr. lineup which debuted in the 80's and so when Noggin debuted this was the channel that Nickelodeon dreamed of having. With reruns of 80's and 70's Sesame Street dubbed Sesame Unpaved and reruns of the original The Electric Company and 321 Contact you could tell that Sesame Workshop wanted to buy Noggin because their shows were rerun on there. But now that Noggin will no longer exist I think it will rebrand as Paramount Jr. But why I think Noggin began losing viewers because of competition from other channels such as PBS Kids and Baby's First TV and when Nick Jr. became a full channel and not just a lineup on Nickelodeon it hurt Noggin because now that Nick Jr. was a full channel Noggin didn't know how to deal with it. But now that Noggin will no longer exist I think Nickelodeon is gonna try to buy Sesame Workshop and launch a new preschool oriented streaming service. Because preschool programming gets high marks from the 3-7 age group a new streaming service for preschoolers will be the ticket
