Movie Spy Thriller "Argylle" Makes #1 during Super Bowl Weekend

Weekend Box Office: Argylle Takes Top Spot, The Chosen Rises to Second Place Debut
by Box Office Staff
February 4, 2024

Taking the top slot in its debut weekend is the Universal Pictures/Apple’s Original Films co-production Argylle, with an estimated $18 million haul on 3,605 domestic screens, including $1.7 million from Thursday previews.

This is on the higher end of early estimates that ranged between a $15 and $20 million start for the $200 million Matthew Vaughn movie.

The current global take in 78 markets stands at $35.3 million on 13,000+ screens in 9,200+ locations, $3 million of which came from IMAX screens ($1.7 on 403 domestic screens, $1.3 on 345 internationals).

The biggest surprise on the movie charts this weekend was not even a movie, but Fathom Events’ screening of the first three episodes of The Chosen‘s fourth season, which came in at $6,035,823 for second place.

This does not include $1,433,216 in Thursday previews for the faith-based show. This limited engagement event, scheduled to play through February 14, was screened at over 2,300 locations; the largest-ever reported footprint for a Fathom release.

This Season 4 trinity is expected to remain in theaters through February 14 for an Ash Wednesday boost. Given this weekend’s performance, more events for the series could be expected as it moves beyond its popular “#BingeJesus” hashtag into the theatrical arena.

Although it dropped one place from #2 (initially reported as #1) last week, MGM’s R-rated action thriller The Beekeeper continues to hold strong with $5,286,617 million on 3277 screens (including a loss of 60 screens from week three).

This represents only a 21% drop from its previous frame, with a total cume of $49,428,992 million domestically over four weeks.

Argylle Beats Lisa Frankenstein in Slowest Super Bowl Weekend of all Time
by Rebecca Rubin
Feb. 11, 2024

Matthew Vaughn’s spy thriller Argylle emerged victorious over newcomer Lisa Frankenstein in a moribund box office with both films struggling to show signs of life.

Argylle claimed the No. 1 spot again with $6.5 million from 3,605 North American venues, marking a steep 62% decline from its disappointing debut. After two weeks of release, Apple’s big-budget caper has generated $28.8 million at the domestic box office and a dismal $60 million globally.

It cost $200 million to produce and stands as the year’s first big bomb.

Horror-comedy Lisa Frankenstein cratered in second place with $3.8 million from 3,144 venues — a terrible start for any movie in wide release. However, Focus Features only spent $13 million to make the film, which may cushion box office shortcomings.

That’s a relief for the studio because neither critics nor audiences responded to the movie, which holds a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes and “B” on CinemaScore.

Sony’s superhero adventure Madame Web and Paramount’s Bob Marley biopic One Love open on Feb. 14, but moviegoing isn’t expected to pick up in earnest until Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part II debuts in March.

For now, ticket sales are down nearly 15% from 2023, according to Comscore.

As a sign of the complete lack of box office competition, David Ayer’s action thriller The Beekeeper remained in the top three for the fifth consecutive weekend, while Timothee Chalamet’s Wonka stayed in the top four for the ninth weekend in a row.

Universal and Illumination’s animated comedy Migration took the fifth spot with $3.02 million from 2,684 theaters this weekend. After eight weeks of release, the family film has grossed $110 million in North America and $235 million globally. It cost $70 million.
