Default Bernard Fox wanted Malcolm Merriweather to replace Barney Fife

https://www.metv.com/stories/bernard...ce-barney-fife

The actor who played Andy's English valet once shared his dream of what happened after Malcolm left Mayberry.

That might have been interesting but I doubt it would have held up for long.

After Barney left, and apparently after Warren Ferguson also.

Can't argue with that.

I've always thought Jerry Van Dyke would have made a good replacement for Barney.

I'd take Jerry over Malcolm for sure.

I think we can all agree that Barney Fife was truly irreplaceable.

Personally, I never took to Andy's English valet and I routinely skip them when binging on the series.

Agree on Jerry and Bernard Fox. I think Fox came into his own in the Dr. Bombay role for Bewitched. Other roles in 60s comedies, like TAGs and The Danny Thomas Show, not so much.

He was pretty good on Hogan's Heroes, I thought.

Don Knotts was definitely one of a kind, but I'd like to have seen Jerry Van Dyke give it a shot.

Yes, that's another role that worked. He was sometimes paired with Nita Talbot which made an even better episode.
