Anyone understand production codes?

For example, Sydney [see list below]. The show only went 13 weeks, and every episode code starts with a 3 expect the penultimate one, which starts with a 5. And there some noticeable differences in that one. So what does all that mean, especially in regards to a short running series?

The production code or production number usually refers to the order in which the episodes were filmed/made as opposed to airdate order.

In the series Sydney that you're referring to, I don't know why the episode "Jake" has a production code of 5001, seems to me the number would be 3101, but again I have no idea why that one episode starts with 50 instead of 31.

I do get the idea of the shooting order vs the aired order, but a thing or two in that 12th ep are noticeably different, and with only 13 episodes shot I’d figure they would be shot relatively close to each other time wise.

I don't know the series well, so just a guess: could episode 12 be a pilot? Sydney's 3100s could be the company's third show, first season. "5001" could be the company's fifth show, first pilot (season zero).

No, the first episode aired was definitely a pilot, setting up Sydney being in LA, getting a new job, meeting a bunch of the characters for the first time. Everyone and everything is definitely established by the time the 12th episode airs.

I think the production codes for 20th Century Fox's TV shows are the easiest to understand, using the "x-three capital letters-xx" format. The production codes start with numbers until a show's ninth season, and then switch to starting with letters starting with that show's 10th season.

The Simpsons had used xABFxx starting in Fall 1998
King of the Hill has used xABExx starting in Fall 1998

I agree with this. 5001 makes no sense. If it is supposed to be 3101 then it could be some sort of error.
