It was a horrible attempt to bring the Brady Bunch characters into the variety show format. There were singing Bradys, Bradys in Sketches, Bradys dancing in lavish production numbers... It was a painful, horrifying display, and if there is a God in heaven, he will never allow this to happen again...

Seriously, it really blew...

The show aired periodically January-May 1977. It was supposed to air on a rotating basis with other programming on Sunday nights, but it was all over the schedule, and all over after only a handful of episodes...

It was complete and utter trash. It was an insane attempt for a return to primetime and I can't believe they managed to get the guest stars they did. Eve Plumb was indeed smart to stay away from this fecal material.

I have not yet seen this show, but I am interested in seeing a few episodes to experience it for myself. I don't understand, however, why the Bradys singing, in Sketches, and dancing would be so bad. (I mean, to me it sounds more interesting than any of the prime-time shows out there today. Then again I think the Brady actors and actresses are among the greatest ever, and The Brady Bunch cannot be duplicated, except in reunions with the original cast, of course!) The Bradys did sing on the original show, and I thought they were TERRIFIC!!!

Please don't misunderstand me, I love The Brady Bunch. It's just the variety format for The Brady Bunch Variety Hour was wrong for the Brady family. Even The Brady Brides and The Bradys was better than The Brady Bunch Variety Hour.

It was very stiff and stilted. Also, It made Robert Reed look silly. He played it like "What are we doing , duh?" and Florence would go "Now, Mike..."
And at the original time it was on, there were dozens of variety shows that were actually fairly good (Donny and Marie, Tony Orlando, Sonny and Cher). The Brady kids really are not very good singers or dancers compared to some of the stars that had their own variety show.
At that time also, the Bradys werent classic or camp yet so it was like "what in the world do they think they're doing??"
Now their variey show is kind of good for camp value. I saw an epsiode about a year or 2 ago (I think on TVLand)
By the way I am a Brady fan, though it doesnt really sound like it from this post!

Poor Robert Reed.
The E True Hollywood Story on the Bunch mentioned that Reed practiced the dance numbers for hours because he had no rhythm whatsoever, and he still looked lost.

I think it might have been GoodLife or one of the other ones now that I think about it. My friend tapes me stuff on her different channels and I am not sure exactly which one that was on.

Indeed, currently TV Land airs non-sitcoms:

The Love Boat
Charlie's Angels
Batman
The Waltons
S.W.A.T
Gunsmoke

When TV Land began in 1996, they had a whole variety of shows (sitcoms, westerns, dramas, variety shows) including:

The Sonny & Cher Show
The Ed Sullivan Show
The Flip Wilson Show
Hill Street Blues
St. Elsewhere
Mannix
The A-Team
The White Shadow

However, over the years, TV Land has began to focus more and more on sitcoms.

Sad Bad TV

I remember seeing a few episodes of their variety show. They were simply out of their element. The only thing that makes sense for is that this type of show was a proven 'winning formula' and they figured that this would work with some popular actors that can't really sing or dance.

I thought it was a poor move and a sad attempt to recreate the Brady family, I've seen two episodes they weren't that bad but I wouldn't think the show could pull all the way, through prime-time.

Well that was a good decision by TV LAND to stop showing variety shows-I don't think i would been able to handle that
