Default Episode 1 a success in the ratings! Dominate!

Although it was expected ABC would get some mileage out of the debut of new comedies 8 Simple Rules For Dating My Teenage Daughter and Life With Bonnie, a whopping 13.0/21 for 8 Simple Rules followed by a 12.2/18 for Life With Bonnie at 8:30 p.m. (both a solid first in their time periods) is better than anyone might have imagined. Look at the facts:

-The combination of 8 Simple Rules and Life With Bonnie outdelivered season premiere episodes of Fox's That'70s Show (#2: 6.4/10) and Grounded For Life (#4: 5.5/ 8) by a considerable 113 percent.

-Compared to the one-hour Dharma & Greg season premiere in this time period on Sept. 25, 2001 (8.7/13), the ABC sitcom duo was up by a hefty 45 percent.

-Compared to CBS (JAG R #3: 5.9/ 9) and NBC (the first hour of repeat special The Cosby Show: A Look Back: 6.1/10), 8 Simple Rules and Bonnie beat the two shows combined by five percent.

Although Life With Bonnie moves to its less cushy Tuesday
9 p.m. time period (opposite NBC's Frasier) next week, 8 Simple Rules is a definite show to keep an eye (or two) on this season.

Less impressive for ABC, but still first in its time period, was the Tuesday 9 p.m. preview of Push, Nevada, which scored a 9.3/14. Although the reality/drama beat the second half of NBC's Cosby Show: A Look Back repeat (#2: 8.4/12) by 11 percent, a loss of 11 percent in rating and two share points in the second half hour (9.8/15 to 8.7/13) is a potential kiss of death. Push, Nevada debuts in its regularly scheduled 9 p.m. Thursday time period tomorrow.

On an additional That'70s Show/Grounded For Life note, season number five may not be the charm for That'70s Show, which was down 17 percent from its fourth season opener on Sept. 25, 2001 (7.7/12). Although Grounded for Life was off 17 percent from the debut of former (and failed) time period occupant Undeclared (6.6/10 on Sept. 25, 2001), last night's third season premiere was actually up six percent from the second season opener on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001 (5.2/ 8).

Elsewhere, repeats of The WB's Gilmore Girls (#5: 3.0/ 5) and Smallville (#5: 3.8/ 6) perked up considerably in anticipation of their season premieres next Tuesday. On UPN, repeats of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer (#6: 2.6/ 4) and Enterprise (#6: 2.1/ 3) remained out of the competitive loop with repeats on PAX (The Weakest Link 1.1/ 2, the two-hour pilot of Just Cause 1.3/ 2) remaining in the distant number seven spot.

At 10 p.m., a repeat of CBS's Judging Amy (6.8/11, up 24 percent over a repeat of lead-in The Guardian: #4: 5.5/ 8) took the hour with an eight percent advantage over ABC special Regis & Kelly in Primetime (6.3/10) and an average 15 percent lead over repeats of NBC's Frasier (#1: 6.7/10) and Just Shoot Me (#3: 5.1/ 9). Stick to daytime Regis & Kelly.

I think this is great news. It goes to show you that John still has a lot of fans out there. But of course, this is premature, remember those great Watching Ellie and Leap of Faith ratings.

We need to wait until all of the other shows settle into their regular timeslots. I think 8 simple things will survive, but life of Bonnie is another story.

Yeah, that is great news! Hopefully it will remain #1 in that timeslot this season. I always knew John could draw in viewers again and I'm glad he's back.

Woah!!! That's great! I knew the ratings would be good, but not that good! Hopefully 8 Simple Rules maintains those ratings for the rest of this season.

Daughter” and the series previews of “Life with Bonnie” and “Push, Nevada”, made ABC the mostwatched
network of the evening (12.2 million). ABC attracted a larger audience than Fox’s lineup,
which included the season premieres of “That ‘70s Show” and “Grounded for Life” and the special

“Everyone at ABC is absolutely delighted with last night’s outstanding performances of ‘8 Simple
Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter,’ ‘Life with Bonnie’ and ‘Push, Nevada,’” stated Susan Lyne,
President, ABC Entertainment. “A lot of hard work went into this, and our strategy of premiering early
for advanced audience sampling worked. Despite being very distinct shows that appealed to different
core audiences, they each performed -- which is a testament to our marketing, publicity and companywide
synergy efforts. They really made a difference, banging the ABC drum loudly enough to bring in
viewers even in the face of the Network’s limited promotional reach this summer.”

year (9/25/01), “8 Simple Rules…” improved the time period by 5.9 million viewers (16.9 million
vs. 11.0 million) and 36% among Adults 18-49 (6.0/18 vs. 4.4/13).
