Watching episodes of LHOTP, where the seemingly eternally-patient Nels Oleson was being constantly hassled by his insufferable wife, Harriet “The Harridan” Oleson, I was reminded of how the equally-uxorious Richard Bucket (pronounced “Bouquet”) was similarly pestered by his own battle-axe-of-a-wife, that eternally social-climbing snob, Hyacinthe Bucket.
I don’t know how Nels and Richard put up with these two nags for so long. Although, at one point Nels was going to leave the horrible Harriet for a younger, more attractive and MUCH nicer woman. Too bad Nels didn’t split from his awful wife for that other lovely woman. As to the sorrowful Richard (or “Dickie”), I guess that he was just too whipped to think about leaving that vicious virago, Hyacinthe. No doubt, both of these poor, long-suffering men went directly to Heaven (and avoided ANY time in Purgatory) after they took their last breaths on Earth. Rest in (a much-deserved) peace, Nels and Richard! |

I will say that Nels was a stronger character who occasionally stood up to Harriet and put her in her place. Richard vs. Hyacinth, not so much.
