I was thinkin' about this in bed last night (funny what you ponder when you can't sleep), Woody called all the other characters by last name only, except for Sam and Carla. Now here are my 2 questions regardin' this:
Did Woody ever call Lilith "Dr. Sternin"? Like, before she married Frasier? I know he called her "Dr. Sternin-Crane" after she was married, but I coudn't remember for sure if he ever referred to her as "Dr. Sternin" in her non-married years. Now, Woody called Sam and Carla by their names cause they were his co-workers, but---and I never thought about this till last night in bed---we all know he always called Diane "Ms. Chambers", but she was the exact same worker-status as Carla---so why the difference?? Did he just think she deserved more respect cause she was so intellectual? I'm sure this is just speculation on fans' parts now...but that's so interesting, Carla and Diane were both barmaids, yet one got "Ms. Chambers" and the other got "Carla". Just somethin' this "Cheers" fan found fascinatin' to ponder late at night, lol... |

I think you're right that Woody called Diane, Miss Chambers, was because of her intellect. She sort of commanded respect. I think he called Sam by his first name because he considered him a friend. As for Carla, she was just a first name kind of gal.
He called the patrons by their last names, Mr. Peterson, Mr. Clavin, etc. most likely because he thought it was the professional thing to do. |

Woody did call Sam and Carla by their surnames in two early episodes. In "Birth, Death, Love and Rice", when Frasier asked for Sam, Woody referred to him as Mr. Malone. A few episodes later, Woody referred to Carla as Mrs. T. In both cases, it didn't sound right while having him call everyone else by their surnames did.
