Default Clampett Family Tree

Over the years around these parts various discussions have come up as to how individuals in the series are related to each other, the episode on METV last night, "The Frog Family" in the ever so tedious frogman episode arc shed some light on this subject. Granny visits with Dr. Klingner (a psychiatrist played by Richard Deacon) and discusses the various components of the family featured on the series, here goes:

Jethro's father was named Fred Bodine, he died in a drowning accident when Jethro was a small child.

Pearl is Jed's first cousin, Elly refers to Pearl as Aunt Pearl even though she is actually Elly's second cousin. (This information given by Granny needs clarification, actually Pearl is Elly's first cousin once removed based on the fact that Pearl and Jed are first cousins).

Jethro refers to Jed as Uncle Jed even though they are second cousins. (again as with the Elly case Granny is incorrect, Jed is Jethro's first cousin once removed).

She ends this discussion with the statement, "and I'm Granny to them all", the statement as it stands doesn't make sense, but we are dealing with a woman who thinks people are changing back and forth between humans and frogs....

One other point, based on the fact that Pearl and Jed are first cousins, Jethro and Elly are second cousins to each other.

This episode is the fifth in the frogman story arc, talk about forty miles of bad road!

I think a lot of people get confused by calling people second cousins when they are first cousins once removed. Second cousins are from the same generation; a first cousin once removed is from the next generation (of the families involved).

Duster is right, there is a lot of family information in that episode. I imagine when Granny said "I'm Granny to them all", she meant that as an honorary title of sorts, rather than literally being everybody's grandmother. Sort of like Jethro calling Jed Uncle Jed.

I agree that frogman arc is long and tedious, although I admit there is still a laugh or two in there. I wonder whose idea it was to beat that particular dead horse so long?

I wonder if Dr. Klinger was related to Maxwell Klinger in some way? Or Mel Cooley, for that matter?

Klingner, the Dr., is not the same as Klinger. Same problem afflicted sportscasters who routinely blew the surname former U of Houston QB David Klingler.

I don't understand that whole "2nd cousins twice removed" and all that, so I'm guessing the Clampetts didn't either lol

I know some of my cousins have children and I've always called their children my 2nd cousins, but I'm not sure that is correct. Because if I had kids, what would my kids be to my 1st cousin's kids? I have no clue lol And yeah Granny meant she was "Granny" as an honorary title. Like Jed is "Uncle Jed"

And interesting factoid I heard that everyone is their own 0th cousin lol

To make it simple, my cousin's child is my cousin once removed. My child and my cousin's child are second cousins.

Getting more complicated, my cousin's child's child is my cousin twice removed. My child's child and my cousin's child's child are third cousins.

Taking into consideration siblings, time passage, and geographic separation as these family trees get larger, many of these people have never even met each other.

Thanks that makes sense. I was referring to my cousins once removed as my second cousins. This is good to know
