I thought he left town so he couldn't be in LITB.

It's possible--he was in The Rifleman, too after LITB.

In some posts from Facebook thru the admin., Rusty Stevens explained LITB let him out of his contract because he wanted to be a normal kid.

His family moved to the East coast, Philadelphia area, a few years later. But during that time after LITB he took some bit part roles.
