Questions concerning CATM episodes - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I can remember back in the 70's when CATM originally aired that there were certain episodes I watched back then that I did not see when TV Land showed them a year ago. I got my CATM Episode Guide out that I copied from the web-site and it said "88 total half-hour episodes were available for syndication from the show's 4 seasons." Does that mean there were more CATM shows that were made but not shown on tv-land this time around? I noiticed too that they were NOT always shown in the production order. A couple episodes were from Nov. and Dec. and then it skipped back to Sept. Towards the end it does not give the air dates for any of the episodes. Does anyone know where I could find a more reliable episode guide? I could swear I saw episodes back then that I have never seen again. In other words, I want to see more CATM!!!!

As I have mentioned on here I watched CATM back in the 70's but wasn't a Freddie fan back then. One nite after watching SANFORD & SON, I left the tv on & continued watching & CATM came out. It looked like a good show so I continued watching & liked it & watched it from then on. After Freddie died, NBC showed re-runs of the Freddie episodes on weekday mornings at 12 noon that summer when high school was out for the summer. I continued to watch the non-Freddie episodes & remember the arrival of Raul but it wasn't as good.

Flash forward to 2001 & I find out TVLAND is gonna show CATM. I am glad cuz I liked the show & hadn't seen it since it went off NBC. I watch alot of the marathon & enjoy it. I start watching the show & soon get into CATM & Freddie & become a Freddie fan.

Well I distinctly remember a CATM episode that was not shown on TVLAND. I can't remember exactly what it was about but I do remember this about it:

Della is in the garage with Chico & Ed. They have a school blackboard in the garage. Della sings to Chico & Ed this old song (a jazz type song) called TEACH ME TONIGHT. I think she is wearing a fancy or sexy type dress (might've been strapless). She comes down the steps in the garage that go up to Eds room & comes down the stairs dressed like that & singing the song. Chico seems impressed but if I remember right I think Ed wasn't too impressed with it. I think he thought it was too sexy or something. I can't remember what else happened other than that.

I do remember that in the late 70's a soul singer (might've been Al Jarreau) put out a version of TEACH ME TONIGHT & it became a hit. I remember thinking this was the song Della did on that episode of CATM.

After I saw this episode origionally when it was shown, I did see the re-run of it once after Freddie died when NBC showed the re-runs of the Freddie episodes. I have not seen this episode since. Because that fall NBC went to the Raul epsiodes & the show got cancelled & then when TVLAND started showing the show they never showed this episode.

I wonder if it is a lost episode or what? I wonder if you might've seen this episode?

Does anyone know any more info on this episode & why it was shown once & then re-run one more time on weekday mornings on NBC after Freddie died & then we never saw it again? I would love to know...

But I believe you're right based on this episode... I also recall they used to show the same episodes alot like the Ed Browns Army Re-union one...

I don't think there are any "lost episodes". You are correct, tho, catcopy, about the production and airing schedules being a bit mixed up the last two seasons. There are varied and conflicting reasons for this, but I do know that a show always tapes an episode months before it is aired. Most of the production of the CATM shows happened between July and March, with the episodes airing from September to May. Why they chose to show them out of order those last two seasons is anybodys guess. There were only 88 episodes filmed and aired. What Cheryl is probably remembering is not a lost episode, but a portion of an episode that was cut due to syndication. Unfortunately, when a show is sold for syndication, it is "stripped" so as to allow for more commercial time to help off set the cost of syndication. Someone on here many months ago remembered another scene with Bernie Kopel that was "stripped" from the face lift episode. The only way we will ever see these episodes in their original "uncut" versions is for some company, like Columbia House, to offer them on VHS or DVD. Usually those companies start with original "uncut" tapes of the show and make their money offering the "fully restored" versions of classic TV shows. I know this is happening because this happened to another of my favorite TV shows of the 60's, the original Star Trek. Those are now fully restored on DVD. Someday I hope to own all 77 episodes of that show. Right now I am a bit strapped for cash. I hope that Columbia House realizes that there is a market for CATM and offers them soon. Then we all can enjoy the extra footage that was cut when TVLand aired them. In the meantime, I will be wearing out my copies of the Freddie episodes. I practally have the dialogue memorized!!!

I would be happy to see at least one episode of CATM because I've never gotten a chance to see the show.

The funny thing about it is that at the time TVLand had been airing it, I didn't have access to the network (TVLand). But when my cable provider finally decided to make it a regular family channel, the network had stopped airing it. I was so pissed.

I was beginning to think that maybe I had dreamed some of those things I had seen and now I understand there may be a justifiable reason. I get alot of videos from Columbia House and every so often I e-mail them with my desire to have CATM on video or DVD. I have their whole series of Barney Miller, Honeymooners and Night Gallery and now I'm receiving the Steven King collection. I keep reminding Columbia House that I'm a good customer and that I know of a lot of other people/fans who are just as interested as I am in getting CATM out in videos. I WILL keep buggin them. Thanks again ladies, I knew you could help me out!

we may not get to see the song della reese sang because of copywrite problems. sometimes it's hard to clear old songs like that.

i agree that we may be seeing (correction, you all may have been seeing. i don't have cable, sniff!

) chopped up versions of the shows. remember when they started airing the uncut "i love lucy" shows? well, more often than most, it was desi arnaz's songs that were taken out.

it wouldn't be inconceivable to have chico on video. hey, if they can have wonder woman on tape, anything is fair game!
