Default Sandra Dee is an honestly better looking Gidget than Sally Field

Dee had a prettier face in her one shot as Gidget in the '59 movie than Field honestly did in the series.

Well, to each his/her own, I suppose. I never saw any of the movies, to tell you the truth, so I am a little biased. But I think Sally Field as Gidget definitely had her own charm :-)

Well that's your opinion but, they both are cute. Sandra Dee had Blond hair, Sally was a brunette. I liked both actresses.

Sandra Dee is better looking than Sally Field. Dee's a blonde doll bombshell. And she isn't Jewish either. I think Field is a hebrew.

Wow, I had no idea that looks depended on what religion you were. You really do learn something new every day on the internet, don't you?

Well you see unless one converts to Judaism usually to be Jewish means to actuially be of ancient Middle Eastern blood. Ms. Field's ancestors lived in Israel 2,000 years ago and those Semitic types are not known generally for their good looks. Ms. Dee being more nordic in background is almost naturally a more attractive woman.

Sandra Dee is, IMO, prettier than is Sally Field.

However, having said that, Sally Field as Gidget was great! !!! She was spunky and cute.

I dunno... it's been a long time since I've seen Sandra Dee in the role, so I don't know if the following is acurate, but:

Sally Field to portrayed Gidget as a typical teenager, with the gawkiness of a teen girl. Sandra Dee (as much as I can remember) was perhaps a little too sophisticated, perhaps because of her looks.

I find Sally Field's portrayal to be more true to the character.

Let me refresh your memory. The film Gidget was supposed to be about teenagers and remember it was made a long time, the 1950's. A girl who is sophisticated in many ways (in America anyway) is often alienated from other teenagers her own age. So beautiful Sandra Dee's Gidget very understandably has problems with being so sophisticated in someways. As far as not understanding sex much which is one of Gidget's problems, well in the 50's sex was so downplayed to the point where it was hard for many young girls at the time to understand it period (no pun intended). This is a problem that no longer exists for nearly all American girs over 10 years old.

Ah, that is true. Though I'm not quite sure how this became a discussion on sexual awareness, I will address that.

Let me refresh your memory. The television Gidget was set in the 1960s, 1965-66 to be exact. Though it is true that attitudes toward sex were changing and relaxing, the mid-60s were a very frightening experience for young girls Gidget's age (15-1/2). Rules of behavior were changing. Actions and ideas that were once taboo, only a few very short years earlier, became more and more prevalent. And remember, the TV Gidget had lost her mother. If I recall correctly, this was not true of the movie Gidget.

Sadly, your statement about girls over 10 in today's society may be true.

But we are talking about a TV show that is almost 40 years old. I was 10 in 1965, when this show began. I can assure you that I did not consider anything I encountered in life, let alone on TV, with the slightest thought of sexual under- or over-tones. The television show, even to me today at age 47, still does not bring to mind anything "sexual." I see a teen girl learning about life and relationships. Yes, sometimes with *gasp* boys. But more often I see relationships with her friends (male and female), her sister and brother-in-law, and most prominently, her father.

I see a gawky teen girl who is evolving into a strong young woman, with the support of her family and friends. And she's having fun along the way.

I feel the mid-60's was a more sexual time than anytime in the 50's. I saw the tv show Gidget quite a few times, most recently when it was just on tv land. I needed no refreshng on it. But you said you didn't remember the film that well.

I think Cindy Carroll played Gidget in Gidget goes to Rome. Sure wasn't beautiful Sandra Dee in that film.
