Because she was stuck with a boy's name, Michael Learned had to have a Miss before her name in the opening credits. All her parents had to do was add a letter and call her Michaela.

I'd assume because her parents liked the name for a female and decided to use it as an androgynous name. I highly doubt she felt "stuck" with it because if she did she most likely would have changed it, at least for show business purposes.
