My grandpa was recently diagnosed with it...what all happens?? Does anyone know? Is it hereditary? I have about a million questions, but I really dont feel like looking up info. Thanks.

I know that Alzheimers' disease is a disease that makes a person lose their memory. Not so much as not know everyday common sense, but forget incidents of their life. Alzheimers is a neurological disease, so I doubt it's hereditary. Although, there could be hereditary forms of the disease, it doesn't necessarily mean that if someone in your family gets it that you will get it. Have you heard about embryonic stem cell transplants? That is a very promising cure for the disease.

My grandma has it...and so do 2 of my great aunts. Well...one died...anyways. My grandma that has it, when I see her, she always asks me the same things over and over and over..and she doesn't even realize she's doing it. And if I tell her something, she forgets and asks me again...and again She's had it for awhile, and now she's gotten REALLY stubborn. She tries to pay for when we go out to eat, and tries to pay my mom (her daughter) for taking her to church on Sunday. It gets really annoying at times...

First of all , I'm so sorry to hear that, Unfortunately, yes, you eventually forget how to do everyday things along with memories of things that happened in your life and sadly enough people.

They are working on a vaccine and there are medications that stabilize it such as Tacrine.

I know someone who has it. This is such a heartwrenching disease. At first (I'll call her Sissy) Sissy would repeat herself and analyze everything. She would open the door and just leave. Just like that! She would walk and walk the streets and no one could find her. We would have to literally watch her especially in the morning hours. Eventually she needed a caretaker because we were afraid she would burn herself cooking. She would remember her son when he walked into a room and get all happy. As the years would pass by she would forget everyone. Including her son. She would then start talking to herself. She would have to drink her food through a straw. There's more but, it is so heartwrenching....... I feel sorry for the people who have this for they didn't ask for this curse to be bought upon their life.

I feel really sorry for your Grandpa but, try to keep the faith.

Thank you all for your comments. I understand it a little better now...and I realize that he must not have it as bad as some people. The only symptoms I've seen is his getting lost when he's driving somewhere...like our house from his, which is 12 blocks away from each other. I dont know how bad his is, but thank you.

I think that comment was very rude... your grandma can't help the fact that she has that disease (can't spell it) and maybe by trying to pay for her way, it is her small way of showing her relatives that she's not a vegetable yet.. so don't treat her like one.

I read this book a few months back about a girl dealing with her mother's Altzhiemers. It's a pretty interesting book because it really deals with Altzhiemers. Here's a link to the book. It can describe it better than I could.
