Stephen Furst -- actor and filmmaker known for playing Flounder in 'Animal House' -- has died due to complications from diabetes ... TMZ has learned. Stephen's son Nathan tells us ... his father died at his home in Ventura Country, CA early Friday morning surrounded by loving friends and family. We're told he battled with diabetes for years and became a spokesperson for the American Diabetes Association. Along with playing Kent 'Flounder' Dorfman in the 1978 comedy classic, he also had starring roles on "Babylon 5" and "St. Elsewhere." He directed a few episodes of 'Babylon 5' as well. He was 63. |

Sad. I haven't heard about or seen him on TV in a very long time. I've wondered what happened to him.

I know this isn't appropriate under the circumstances but everyone thinks of this when they think of him.

I'll be watching National Lampoon's Animal House tonight as my latest "Tribute to a Fallen Star", Stephen Furst.

I already remember reports from years ago, that his health wasn't so great.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I really enjoyed Steve a lot in his roles.
And diabetes can be a horrible disease when it really takes off. Very debilitating to say the least. (I'm lucky my case is mild, and that I can still do many things to keep it that way. The food sacrifices really suck at times.) |

RIP
My introduction to Stephen wasn't Animal House. It was his role as Junior in the 1980 horror film The Unseen. He turned in an underrated performance as a creepy manchild living in the basement of his parent's home. He was very funny in the comedy Midnight Madness. His sons are carrying on the family tradition in show biz, one son is a composer (Composed music for his dad's films, and such films as Need For Speed), the other son is an actor/director (two films he directed are the horror films Starve and Mask Maker) |

Stephen Furst also appeared in the movie Disney's The Little Mermaid II Return To The Sea where he provided the voice of the sea otter named Dash and he also sang in the movie as well

Diabetes can be a nasty disease. And sadly for some it can be deadly. Poor Steve, may he rest in peace.
