Default In my social studies class today

In my social studies (U.S. HIstory) we were talking about how there is a 4 part chain to what happens to all governments (with the 4th step usually ending in a war) and so we started with the begining of the constitution, went through all the world wars, and ended with the question marks of what will happen due to 9/11. When we got to the 1950's and 1960's we were talking about how it was the most ideal time of the united states and how television was just starting and how everythign seemed to be perfect, he called it the GOOD 'ol 50's n' 60's. And when he started to compare how the 50's was ideal and the 90's and 2000's weren't so ideal, he started saying how television had just come out and it was a big deal. I dunno how we got on the subject but all of a sudden he just said, "look at all the 50's television shows, you've got Father Knows Best and their biggest problem probably was, 'Oh my gosh! Bud won't drink his milk!' and so then he's gotta go up to his room and talk to him and give him the moral lesson for the day." after he said the milk thing he paused for a little while and i said kind of to myself Leave it to Beaver, and my partner (we have tables in that class and it's 2 people to a table) turned and looked at me like i was joking around. after he said the moral lesson of the day he kinda of paused again and then he said, "Leave it to Beaver. You've got June Cleaver in a slim fit dress, well, cuz she's a thin and can look good in a slim fit dress, but she's got her little apron on, and is vacuming in pearls. Then when Ward gets home she kisses him and asks him how his day was. There was no more of a perfect world then that right there! Shows like that never talked about drugs or sex or drinking or rape, they all were pure, told a lesson, and let us see what america was truely about." then i stepped in and said Beaver had some episodes that were a little contraversial for that time. And he just said like what? and i told him about the pipe and the all night party (how ward mentioned to wally that he wasn't allowed to drink) episodes, he looked at me like i was insaine that i even knew who ward, june, wally, and the beav were and then i said, plus, you had lucy ricardo who had a baby on television for the first time, which basically showed that her and ricky had been having sex... it's just the assumption you take with it. And he's like, you're the first student today who's actually known who the Clearvers were and faught for your point of view, you're my new favorite student, and the rest of the class just looked at me like i was an idiot and a nerd, but i was thrilled to have even heard him MENTION it, even though it is/was a very popular show!

And that's my little story for the day, and perhaps i shoudl let you know that the 2nd part to my script will probably go up tomorrow afternoon.

Toodles!

NICE!! It really irks me when Leave It To Beaver gets lumped into other shows of the time such as Father Knows Best or The Donna Reed Show. I bet decades from now people will put 7th Heaven & Rosanne in the same category too. Beaver was a cut above the rest and DID deal with real problems such as alcoholism, divorce, smoking, theft, etc. So congrats for sticking up for a great show.

Default UGH! That just drives me crazy!!!!!!

Good for you for speaking up. The thing that drives me up the wall is people that look at us oddily for actually knowing about old shows and old stars. I have two stories that are kind of similar to the odd looks.

I was in Senior Home Ec and just rattling away about some old show and one of my friends just stared at me and then she said, "How the hell do you know all these peoples names?" She thought it was a little odd that I could name all these classic stars.

Then a few weeks later, one of my friends asked me if I caught the Don Knotts biography on A & E. I said no that I had forgotten. This guy overheard the conversation and asked, "Who's Don Knotts"? Then I got into this huge explanation, and I could tell the guy thought I had just landed from outer space or something.

Yeah, the same thing happened to me when I was in high school. one of my friends used to make fun of me for always watching black and white shows. she said that litb was stupid. so one day i finally asked her if she had ever even seen the show and of course she hadnt so i made her watch it with me and she loved litb from then on.
