After watching many episodes, I think Tim and Jill have a typical American marriage. They like and care for each other, but I don't think they are madly, deeply in love with each other.
I think both of them stay together for the sake of their kids. They both do their agreed roles of running a household. I think both are disappointed and somewhat frustrated with their relationship, but try not to be overtly aggressive and truthful because the other's feelings will be hurt. At times, both Tim and Jill are extremely passive aggressive. At the end of many episodes, Tim is begging for Jill's forgiveness and approval (Tim uses grovel a lot when he goes way out of his way to insult his wife) and the following episode, Tim manages to say stupid things because he never learns to watch his words. |
