"Five Nights at Freddy's" Sets New Record for Horror Genre in 2nd Weekend

Five Nights at Freddy’s Box Office: All the Records Shattered in Opening Weekend

Five Nights at Freddy’s, Universal and Blumhouse‘s terrifying adaptation of the popular video game, made a killing in its box office debut with $78 million in North America and $130 million globally.

For a $20 million-budgeted horror film that landed simultaneously on streaming (in this case, Peacock), these ticket sales would have been significant by the end of its theatrical run.




In just three days of release, Five Nights at Freddy’s has already surpassed the entire global haul of 2022’s Halloween Ends ($104 million) and will soon overtake 2021’s Halloween Kills ($133 million) — which previously ranked as the biggest hybrid releases from Universal and Peacock.

Unlike Five Nights at Freddy’s, those slasher sequels were from a time-tested film franchise.




Audiences have responded enthusiastically to the film (which landed an A- CinemaScore), unlike unimpressed critics (it has a 25% on Rotten Tomatoes).

However, that kind of discrepancy usually doesn’t matter for the horror genre.

Five Nights at Freddy’s Adds Peacock Streaming Record to Box Office Haul

Having slayed at the box office with a global haul of $132.7 million, the video game adaptation/horror film — which opted for a day-and-date, Oct. 27 release on streaming — also emerged as Peacock‘s most-watched film or series ever in its first five days.

Five Nights at Freddy’s‘ box office haul, meanwhile, makes it the biggest horror film opening of 2023, as well as the biggest Blumhouse global opening of all time.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is First Horror Leader in Post-Halloween Frame Since 1991

Universal’s horror video game adaptation fell a steep -76% to $19.4M in its sophomore frame, as is to be expected over the immediate post-Halloween weekend.

Still, lacking major competition, it repeats in first place and becomes the first “true” horror film to win the immediate post-Halloween weekend since 1991’s The People Under the Stairs.

(Another movie arguably belonging to the horror genre, 1993’s animated musical The Nightmare Before Christmas, also won its year’s post-Halloween frame.)




While horror sometimes leads on Halloween weekend or the weekend immediately preceding the holiday, Freddy’s marks an extremely rare instance of the genre leading on the frame following the holiday.

With $113.6M, Freddy’s is already the top horror film of this calendar year so far after only two frames, beating the final total of March’s Scream VI with $108.1M.

I watched it on Peacock and then went to check out some playthroughs of the video game, but I was confused on how the game was played. I was envisioning some type of Silent Hill gameplay.
