Yes, I think he was working on either the telephone or electrical lines.

Kinda strange for telephone lines to be running through a wooded area. And why didn't Andy see the telephone lines when Opie took him out there to meet McBeevee? Andy was pretty smart, but not so smart in this episode. He should have been able to put 2 and 2 together.

I was at a T intersection waiting for the light, and I noticed lines going thru the woods. They had evidently cut a narrow swath for them. I thought it was odd, since there are no houses or businesses in sight, but they gotta be going somewhere. Mr. Mcbeevee was back there working on them lol.

In reality there are always pylon towers going through wooded areas and greenbelts in the city, connecting utility cables.
This wooded area would have been close enough to the town that Opie could play there. |

The episode's something of a ripoff of The Danny Thomas Show episode "Linda's Giant," from 1959. It doesn't really answer the question, but I think Andy's mad because Danny was mad.
