Both number one picks in their respective drafts this summer (Bedard-NHL, Wembanyama-NBA). Both hailed in various circles as generational talents. Bedard begins tonight, Wembanyama later this month. Be interesting to see if neither, one, or both live up to such lofty expectations.

I'll know Bedard has made it when I don't have to double check if its Connor or Conner. I'll know Victor is successful if I don't have to look up the spelling of his last name.

Although, to be honest, even though he's already an NBA star, I'm NEVER going to be able to spell Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The term generational talent gets overused a little too much. Wayne Gretzky and Michael Jordan were generational talents.

It's a little too early to anoint the kid The Next Great One. He looks pretty good so far. He's not very big at a generous 5' 10". He looks like he is about 12 years old. He reminds me a little of Patrick Kane. If he can win 3 Cups like Kane, then Chicago fans will be happy.

The red Blackhawks jerseys are the best in the league.

First major injury

Bedard out 6-8 weeks for Blackhawks after surgery for broken jaw

CHICAGO -- Connor Bedard will be out 6-8 weeks for the Chicago Blackhawks after having surgery on his fractured jaw Monday.

The No. 1 pick in the 2023 NHL Draft was injured in a 4-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils on Jan. 5 on a hit from defenseman Brendan Smith. Bedard skated into the offensive zone and was checked by Smith in the slot. He left the ice with his hand at his mouth.

The rookie forward leads the Blackhawks and all NHL rookies with 33 points (15 goals, 18 assists) in 39 games. He was named last Thursday to the 2024 NHL All-Star Game, which is Feb. 3 in Toronto.
