78th Grand Marshal Larry Hagman The man who laid claim to his own personal “genie” in the 1960s; and who dominated television in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s as the “man everyone loved to hate” will be spending the last weekend in April in Winchester, Virginia this year. Larry Hagman, will serve as the Grand Marshal for the 78th edition of the Northern Shenandoah Valley’s annual Rites of Spring. Hagman was born in Fort Worth, Texas, son of actress Mary Martin and attorney Ben Hagman. After his parents’ divorce he moved to Los Angeles to live with his grandmother. At age 12 he returned to his mother who had remarried and was pursuing what would turn out to be one of the most spectacular careers in Broadway history (“Peter Pan”, “The Sound of Music”, “South Pacific”). He went to England as a member of the cast of “South Pacific” and stayed for five years. While in England, Hagman met and married Maj (pronounced “My”) Axelsson, a young Swedish designer who Hagman insists “is the best thing that ever happened to me.” He joined the U. S. Air Force, and produced and directed shows for the armed forces. After his tour of duty, he returned to the United States and appeared in a series of Broadway and Off-Broadway plays. He also began to do some television work, and, after a two-year run in the daytime soap opera, “The Edge of Night”, he packed up his family, which by then included a daughter, Kristina Mary, and a son, Preston, and moved to Hollywood. There Hagman became a true television star. In the hit comedy series, “I Dream of Jeannie”, he played an amiable astronaut whose life was plagued by a beautiful blond genie played by the gorgeous Barbara Eden. In constant reruns since its original five-year run in the 1960s, “Jeannie”, with other “quirky” early television shows like “Bewitched”, has reached “icon” status in the 21st century. Hagman went from television star to television superstar in 1977, when “Dallas” hit the network airwaves. The saga of an excessively rich Texas family was one of the boldest, brassiest, most talked-about shows ever. Hagman’s J. R. Ewing, was a despicable, corrupt, merciless millionaire and the centerpiece of the show. His character quickly became known as “the man everyone loved to hate”. The series ran at the top of the ratings for an unprecedented 13 seasons. The “Who Shot J. R.?” episode remains the second highest rated TV show in the history of the medium. Since the sensational run of “Dallas”, Larry has appeared in feature films such as “Primary Colors” and “Nixon”; television mini-series such as “The Third Twin”; and been very active with charitable work. He is an adamant non-smoker and chaired the American Cancer Society’s “Great American Smokeout” campaign from 1981 to 1992. As the recipient of a liver transplant, he has worked tirelessly in the area of organ donation and transplantation. He has received the American Kidney Foundation’s Public Service Award for his work. Hagman and his family live on a ranch in Ojai, California. He is an avid “Harley-hog” and enjoys fishing, traveling and collecting hats and flags. This accomplished actor believes that life should be lived to the fullest and the Hagman family motto is; “Don’t worry, be happy, feel good.” What a perfect Grand Marshal for the 78th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival!! Larry will ride in both the Firefighters’ Parade on Friday, April 29th at 5pm, and in the Grand Feature Parade on Saturday, April 30th at 1:30pm., and will also make brief appearances at all events. |

Did anyone go? That is sooooo awesome! And also Mary Tyler Moore was as well one year and in it. Some years ago and I found out in her book. And she's my all-time favorite actress. And seeing Larry would be cool too.
And the weird part is, I used to live close to Winchester!!! And was there often. Esp The Apple Blossom Mall. I did go there last summer while I was up there visiting my best friend, who has now moved, but still... And after hearing all this of celebs being their and classic ones to top that... OH! That is kinda irratating! LOL |
