Brian Austin Green, 50, talks four-year 'stroke-like' illness that left him unable to read, write or even SPEAK... and says his DIET was to blame​

Brian Austin Green has laid bare his 'stroke-like' former illness, which lasted over four years and left him unable to read, write or even speak.

The 50-year-old Hollywood actor explained that his spiraling health problems included both vertigo and the inflammatory bowel condition ulcerative colitis.

During an appearance on the podcast, Likes And Spray Tans hosted by Dancing With The Stars alum Cheryl Burke, Brian looked back at his medical crisis.

He shared that he experienced 'neurological issues' that took hold 'after the vertigo' and that at one point he spent three months bedridden.

A specialist eventually told him that along with stress, his diet was to blame - specifically 'internal inflammation from gluten and diary.'

Brian's struggles unfolded during the course of his marriage to Hollywood bombshell Megan Fox, which ultimately ended in 2020.

His floundering health forced him to take years off work, between the end of the show Anger Management in 2014 and the film Cross Wars in 2017.

On her podcast, Cheryl wondered whether Brian's sickness may have been brought about by the car accident he famously survived back in 2014.

The incident occurred that December, when he and Megan were in the vehicle together and a drunk driver crashed into them.

Brian however clarified that the roots of his distress were 'dietary,' while acknowledging that his circumstances could appear 'confusing' to an outsider.

He noted that he 'I spent four and a half years recovering from stroke-like symptoms without ever having had a stroke. But I couldn’t speak.'

When Cheryl asked if his troubles were attributable to vertigo, Brian replied that 'Vertigo was one stage of it,' before explaining further.

'It was, I had ulcerative colitis, and then I had vertigo I was bedridden for like three months, but both things were un-diagnosable. I, nobody could figure out, all the specialists that I saw,' said the heartthrob.

'So these neurological things started happening after the vertigo and that was – it was four and a half years of my life. I got to the point where I shuffled like I was a 90-year-old man. I couldn’t speak. I couldn’t read. I couldn’t write.,' he recalled.

'Again, it was all undiagnosed by Western medicine, so I ended up having to finally find a doctor that is much more into like kinesiology and Eastern medicine.'

That doctor informed Brian that he had 'such internal inflammation from gluten and dairy,' despite having spent his 'whole life' eating them.

Brian was told that he had been unable to detect the source of the problem before because 'It was internal inflammation, so there was no way of seeing visually from the outside. He was like: “I’m sure you felt fine, and you did,” and I did. I was active my whole life. I worked out. Like I was very, I was that guy.'

Before he found the doctor who traced his illness back to his diet, Brian placed himself in the hands of the crème de la crème of Western medicine.

'Oh, I had a doctor at Cedars that is - he’s one of the top neurologists in the country, and he would share everything that was going on with me with his colleagues and try and figure out what was going on,' the actor dished.

'I had done over 190 blood tests. I had two MRIs,' recalled the Beverly Hills, 90210 actor. 'And it got to the point where he was like: "I don’t know what to do. I don’t know what’s going on with you. Good luck."'

He had 'such brain fog that I reintroduced my best friend of like 25 plus years to my sister, who he had also known for 25 plus years, because they were both in the same room and I was like: "Oh, Scott, you’ve met my sister Lorelei before, right?"'

Suffering from a mystery illness was a frightening experience, he said, '‘cause I had no idea what caused it. I had no idea if I could relapse again.'

Last year, he did indeed experience another bout of ulcerative colitis - one that caused him to lose 20lbs and be bedridden for weeks on end.

He was nursed to recovery by his girlfriend, Dancing With The Stars pro Sharna Burgess, who was then pregnant with their son Zane.

'I didn’t realize how debilitating it was until I saw him and watched weight drop off him,' she shared shortly afterwards on Good Morning America.

'I try and avoid gluten and dairy as much as possible,' Brian explained on the show. 'It’s really just dietary, like, as long as I can keep things within my system that my body doesn’t think I’m poisoning it with, then it doesn’t fight back.'

He added: 'I would eat food, and literally it was like, my body didn’t process any of that. So then, when you start playing catch up with, like, staying on top of being hydrated enough, that’s such a battle.'

Per the Mayo Clinic: 'Ulcerative colitis can be debilitating and can sometimes lead to life-threatening complications. While it has no known cure, treatment can greatly reduce signs and symptoms of the disease and bring about long-term remission.'
