journal entry: GG appreciation - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I've got an online journal, and fairly recently I had written an entire entry on GG and how much I love it. I also went into the DVD petition issue, but I cut that part out for this post, as I've already written about it all over this board. If nothing else, this is just a little "appreciation piece" about the show, and what it brings to me.

Thank You for Being a Friend.....

Here it is 3:30 in the am, and here I am drinking coffee and visiting all the Golden Girls websites I can find on the net. I am adamant to stay alive until every episode of The Golden Girls is available to own on DVD/VHS.
It's probably unhealthy to obsess about such trivial things as tv shows, but other people obsess about worse things. I've been watching the show now for about a year and a half on Lifetime, a channel that I believe is only functioning because of the Golden Girls, Designing Women, and recently Mad About You. The movies the channel insists on showing every night are the worst kind of dreck, but at 6 pm and 11 pm most weeknights (and 9am if I'm awake or not in class), my life is brightened for two half-hours by the adventures of 4 older women in a quaint house in Miami. It's quite possibly one of the best sitcoms in recent years and for good reasons. Not only does it benefit from a top notch cast (Betty White is amazing already, add Bea Arthur and it can't be beat), but it's also very well written. The one-liners come fast and furious. The issues handled (homosexuality, artificial insemination, death, menopause, etc) were dealt with tastefully and effectively.
I don't know why I always tune in. Lifetime does indeed own all 180 episodes, but for some reason, they broadcast them very randomly, so often you'll see the same episode twice in the same week, or even three times. And yet I'll keep it on, even if I've seen the episode three hundred times, even if I just have it playing in the background and don't really pay attention. It just brings a smile to my face and puts me in a very nice, relaxed, pleasant place. I suppose when everyday in your life seems like a struggle, as is often the case with mine (drama queen)you start to really enjoy the little things. And thus, The Golden Girls has become part of my daily routine. When everything else goes wrong, I still there will be one part of my day that I will laugh, smile, and just feel good about life.
