Default Moon River was on My Fair Opponent

In the scene where Marcia asks her parents to show her how to waltz dance in the den, because she hopes to beat Molly the girl she helped transform into a beauty, she plays this song on the phonograph player.

Doesn't it seem strange that they would play such a popular song, so recent for the times, rather than just doing a standard waltz thought up by the musical director for the show?

And wouldn't there be legal issues with broadcasting it again, like with Happy Days where they had to change a lot of music from the original broadcast episodes?

Funny I just watched this episode. Are you watching the DVD? In syndication its possible they changed the song because I did not recognize it as Moon River. It was a generic classical music song. I could be wrong and my memory is that I do remember Moon River. Moon River was also in an episode of All In The Family. Back then copyright was not a big deal. Networks stopped showing certain episodes of Mamas Family in the 80s and 90s because of copyright issues. Then it changed and now networks show those episodes with the original music. Yet on the DVD they cut the music out and overdub it with something else. All so strange. Next time I watch that episode I will have to watch and listen really close. I just recorded it from MeTV and will watch later today.

I just watched it from the Sunday broadcast. It was not the original Moon River but an instrumental cover.

That's a rarity on the Brady Bunch since they always had their own music. They also used the Romeo and Juliet song in an episode. But they always used their own original music. I always thought that was funny. For example when Jan plays a tape recorder of some new band and its a horn band which is something teenagers would not have been interested in.

I just found the episode and checked to see and it was definitely an instrumental version of "Moon River".

That's right about Romeo and Juliet. Maybe it's not an issue if it's performed by a different artist. Probably the same orchestra or director as the shows background music.

OK. I can almost hear it in my head. In order to fit the shag carpet times it may have been one of those cheesy 1970s organs that had the programmed rhythm tracks to accompany the melody.

Today they showed the episode with the Romeo and Juliet theme when Bobby kisses Millicent and gets the mumps.
