Still six more long weeks to wait until the 3rd-season dvd set of "The Patty Duke Show" from Shout is due to arrive. But, as a little consolation, I did notice that the episode of "The Virginian" that Patty guest-starred in (entitled "Sue Ann," originally airing in Jan. 1967) is slated to be run this Wednesday, the 14th, on the Encore Westerns channel. Not certain, but this might have likely been Patty's first post-TPDS tv-work following her series' end. Interesting choice to appear in "The Virginian," as it had been NBC's direct competition opposite the "Patty Duke Show" on Wednesday evenings for all three seasons of the latter's run.

Pretty familiar plotline of young gal wanting to escape the confines of rural farm life and taste the excitement of the outside world. Usually leads to transgressions and histrionics, but the twist here is that our heroine is actually pretty darned level-headed for the most part (with Duke serving up a warm and ingratiating performance). It's actually the pursuing beau who wigs out in this thematic variation. I noticed classic b-western baddie Roy Barcroft in the small role of the stagecoach driver. Nice to see this episode, as these later, post-Judge Garth entries of "The Virginian" have been rather rare to encounter up until now. Sure wish if Duke could have made a few more guest-appearances in westerns. She looked absolutely great (and quite natural) in those old-time western duds. Cute as a button!

Thin? Yep, probably so. She often did tend to look a bit more thin in the years following TPDS. I used to think a lot of it was attributable to the switchover from that big-hair/wig style of the mid-60s to a more straight-down look of the late-60s/early-70s, as that sometimes could give off different impressions regarding weight and appearances. However, I believe I did read somewhere about Patty stating she indeed battled one of those familiar eating disorders (good grief, as if she didn't already have a boatload of troubles to contend with back then!).

I still haven't seen this episode, but I have watched some of the other cast members in westerns: Eddie Applegate on Gunsmoke and William Schallert on Bat Masterson (among other westerns he worked on). When Schallert has a moustache, it's hard not to think about the Kenneth character on TPDS.

William Schallert was in tons of westerns. Seems such a far cry from his Martin Lane character, but I swear, give him a mustache, a cowboy hat, and a bolo tie, and Schallert can look real westerny. One particularly good example of a western that he was in was an early episode of "Have Gun, Will Travel," entitled "The Long Night," where he played a rifle salesman. Good, tense episode. On the other hand, he also appeared in a late, last-season episode of "HGWT," playing a Chinese guy, of all things. It's been a long time since seeing that one, but it wasn't too hot, as I recall. It was a 1963 episode, however, which means it was getting really close to his TPDS work.
On similar lines, Patty herself was also in 1963 in an episode of "The Wide Country," which was sort of a modern-day western, akin to "Stoney Burke." She looks very much like she did in the TPDS pilot in it, with that darker, shorter hair. Must have been filmed around the same time. Andrew Prine, who co-starred in "The Wide Country" had been with Patty in "The Miracle Worker," the year before, and I wonder if that connection had something to do with her making a guest-appearance in it. It was a good little series. |
