Thelma went downhill FAST after the third Season.
In Season 4, Thelma lets Ray in and let's him be ALONE with her to wait for Willona and Florida come back from shopping . This would have been all fine and dandy if Ray hadn't made a leery comment (Delicious)while smiling creepily at Thelma on Willona's birthday. Ray tries to rape Thelma but luckily Willona and Florida come back just in time. Thelma shouldn't have answered the door at all. At least Thelma calls Ray out for being a creep in front of Willona. Thelma actually believes Lloyd's lie about being a top secret agent for the Government who can only work at night )In reality, Lloyd was in some kind of halfway house or something like that because he was married to two different people at the same time at one point. Igbe implied he might do that eventually, but for Igbe, being married to more than one woman in Africa is okay and part of African Culture but for Lloyd in America it's subject to incarceration) . Lloyd also tells Thelma he had been incarcerated for Embezzlement and she's like,"As long as you told me the truth, we can still date." Embezzlement is a BIG crime, I can't believe Thelma would be okay with dating someone who would have been an Embezzler...![]() She finally dumps him when she finds out he wasn't really an Embezzler, he was incarcerated because of being married to two different women at the same time, a real deal breaker for Thelma. Remember, Thelma also dumped Igbe because Igbe implied he might marry other women eventually if they got married. Thelma believed that Penny fell and was confused on why Willona was accusing Miss Gordon of abusing Penny when it was obvious Penny was getting abused by Miss Gordon. ![]() I remember a GT Fan saying something like,"I'm shocked that Thelma actually believed Penny's lies(s). Thelma's usually more observant than that. Thelma eventually comes to her senses and sassily says something like,"Miss Gordon is probably shopping for boxing gloves!"![]() Thelma had dreams of becoming a Doctor, a Writer, and a Dancer, and when she met/married Keith, she was just a stay at home wife with no career goals. A Fan said something like,"Thelma just stood by Keith smiling creepily when Keith was savagely roasting Cindy's racist Parents. The old Thelma wouldn't be standing there smiling creepily. She would have been savagely roasting Cindy's racist Parents too. They really ruined Thelma's character by this point." Another GT Fan was like,"I also noticed that Thelma was just standing there smiling creepily." At least Thelma got some of her old spunk back when she tried to kick Keith out of the house after he drunkenly slapped her. She also told him off and slapped him back and harder conveying, "Don't you dare ever hit me again!"

I don't think Thelma went down hill until the 6th season. In 4th and 5th season she went from being child of the family to adult female member of family. With love life that adults go thru. But in 6th season I agree that she wet down hill. Nothing to do but sit around the house and play shadow to Kieth. She even quit going college.

Many fans share your sentiment that Thelma Evans’ characterization shifted significantly in the later seasons of Good Times. This "downhill" trend is often attributed to the show’s transition from a grounded family drama to a more traditional sitcom format after the departure of John Amos (James).
Here is an analysis of the specific points where Thelma’s character arc felt inconsistent: The Ray and Thelma Conflict: In "Willona's Surprise" (Season 4), Thelma's decision to be alone with Ray—despite his previous "creepy" behavior—is often cited as a lapse in her usual street-smarts. However, some viewers argue that her immediate calling out of his behavior in front of Willona showed her core "spunk" remained intact. The Lloyd "Secret Agent" Debacle: In "Thelma's Brief Encounter" (Season 5), Thelma’s willingness to believe Lloyd’s outrageous "top-secret agent" cover story was a stark departure from her Season 1 persona as the most skeptical and observant sibling. Her acceptance of his alleged embezzlement conviction—contrasted with her later discovery of his bigamy—highlights a shift toward making her character more desperate for a romantic connection. The Penny Abuse Storyline: In "The Evans Get Involved" (Season 5), Thelma’s initial belief in Penny’s "falls" caused frustration for fans who remembered her as the family's "militant" voice alongside Michael. While she eventually confronted Mrs. Gordon, her delayed reaction was seen by many as a narrative tool to prolong the tension rather than a reflection of her true character. Marriage and Career Goals: In the early seasons, Thelma was an aspiring dancer and intellectual who took education seriously as a way to help her family. By Season 6, after marrying Keith Anderson, her individual ambitions largely vanished from the scripts. The "Creepy Smiling": Fans have noted that during Keith's confrontations—such as the roasting of Cindy's racist parents—Thelma was relegated to a passive "supportive wife" role rather than the sharp-tongued participant she once was. Final Spark: As you noted, her "old spunk" briefly returned during the Season 6 domestic violence storyline where she physically defended herself against a drunken Keith, signaling that her original strength hadn't been entirely written out. This shift was even felt by actress Bern Nadette Stanis, who eventually advocated for Thelma to have more of a "voice" again, similar to her brothers J.J. and Michael, after feeling her role had become "boring" and centered only on domestic tasks. |
