Why didn't the character FLO return to Alice after her Spinoff was canceled? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I hear that flo was a popular character o Alice but can someone tell me why she did not return? She could have returned to Alice the same way Florence returned to the Jeffrsons-Her job caught on fire and burned down

There could be many reasons but I think there are two probable. Either Polly Holiday did not want to or the producers decided not to go that route again. I agree she should have come back!

I understand that her and Linda Lavin did not get along because they were saying that Flo was the star and actually Linda Lavin was the true star. Look at the 79-80 season and see the way Linda Lavin interacted with Polly in her last season on the show. Linda, from what was said. did not make Diane Ladd's life a piece of cake on the show.

Well since i have no way of seeing Alice, I wanted to ask you how did Linda Lavin interact with Polly during the 79-80 season?

Watch the 79-80 episodes and compare the way Linda interacted with Polly on camera was different than the first three years the show aired.

On the E network they did a thing on Alice and Diane Ladd have stated that her experience was not pleasant on the show.

Basically there were ego issues going on with Linda Lavin.

Linda Lavin did indeed have an ENORMOUS ego. On the "Alice" set, you had to defer to Lavin or you were out. As many stars are, Lavin wanted to hog the spot light and went the character of Flo was getting all the attention, Lavin was not at all pleased. The producers finally gave the character of Flo her own series. A doomed effort from the beginning just to get rid of a perfectly talented actress. Honestly, "Alice" was never the same again.

So basically the women who played Flo was out of a job. I guess the deal was for her spinoff to be a success since there was so much tension between her and Linda Lavin.

Flo did seem to get more attention than ALICE did. I liked Flo better. Her personality was funny and cool at the same time. After she left, the show was never the same. As for Belle, I didn't like her at all, Jolene was okay. Jolene was better than Belle, but they could never replace FLO. At least that's my opinion.

I think The lady who played Flo could not return to Alice if her spinoff failed since there was so much tension between her and Linda Lavin. So i think the show FLO had to be a hit because she didn't get along with the lead character on Alice.

I agree with everyone so far about Flo. But it seems common for the characters to not return to the orignal show except for special occasions. I think the gang at Mel's Diner would have gladly welcomed her back with open arms.

It could quite possibly be that Ladd didn't want to do the show anymore. Sometimes that happens with some of the less successful spinoffs. Or it could have been an issue Lavin. Either way, it is too bad.
