Isn't the Flinstones the cartoon version of the Honeymooners? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I always noticed that the flinstones were really the honeymooners. Think about it, Fred sounded like and acted like ralph, Wilma looked like alice in the face and sounded like alice, and we all know that barney sounded like norton and betty was sort of like trixie. Were the cast members of the honeymooners the voices for the Flinstones? Has anyone else noticed how the flintstones reminds you of the honeymooners?

The Flinstones has always been considered a cartoon version of The Honeymooners. Their neighbors, the Gruesomes were brought in to parody The Munsters, which was also on the air at the time..

I figured that because i knew their voices sound just like cast members from the Honeymooners.

Actually I think, Jackie Gleason played the voice of Fred Flinstone at one time. I'm not sure.

Alan Reed provided the voice for Fred in the original series.
A few actors have done his voice in the other versions of the show and the commercials, but I don't think Gleason was among them.

Well it sure sounded like it Jackie Gleason. But I kind of knew it wasn't him.

The actors who lent their voices to the Flintstones were:

Alan Reed - Fred
Mel Blanc - Barney
Jean Vanderpyl - Wilma
Bea Benadaret - Betty

As you can see this is not the cast of the Honeymooners. However they are all very talented. Besides voicing Wilma, Jean Vanderpyl is also known as the voice of Rosie the maid on the Jetsons. Bea Benadaret was a regular on both the radio and tv versions of the George Burns and Gracie Allen Show. She is best remembered as Cousin Pearl on the first season of Beverly Hillbillies and as Kate Bradley on Petticoat Junction. Mel Blanc was a member of the ensemble cast of the Jack Benny Program and is remembered fondly as the voice of many of the Warner Brothers cartoons.

Actually, according to "The Art Of Hanna-Barbera", when the idea of doing an animated prime-time sitcom was first presented to Bill and Joe, the "Honeymooners" was chosen as a specific model for the series. And H-B didn't stop there...each subsequent prime-time show they produced had its roots in a previous live action version: Top Cat (1961)-Sgt. Bilko; The Jetsons(1962) Blondie; Jonny Quest (1964)-Terry and the Pirates; Wait 'til Your Father Gets Home (1972)-All in the Family; Capital Critters(1990)-Doogie Houser, M.D.

Some other things you might find interesting about "The Flintstones":

Originally titled "The Flagstones", Hanna-Barbera had to change the name when the legal department for King Features Syndicate threatened a copyright-infringment suit; it seems our erstwhile cavemen had the same surname as the family featured in Mort Walker and Dik Browne's "Hi and Lois" strip. So it was changed to..."The Gladstones" (but not for long, as history bears out.)

When the show first aired, Jackie Gleason-creator and star of the Flintstones's inspiration, "The Honeymooners" was actually going to sue Hanna-Barbera for infringment, but his advisors convinced him that to do so would garner him nothing but bad publicity, so he let the matter drop,

Sometime in 1961 Mel Blanc (the voice of Barney Rubble and Dino, among others) was involved in a near-fatal automobile accident and spent a few weeks in a coma, and then another few months in a body cast, so, except for a few episodes at the start of the 1961-'62 season where Barney was voiced by Daws Butler (Yogi Bear; Huckleberry Hound), Mel did his voice recording from his bed (with the rest of the cast at his bedside.)

In the show's pre-premiere publicity the Flintstones had a SON...yes, you read it right, a son named Fred Jr., who only made an appearance in the Little Golden Books of the show. He never appeared at all on the series (or any of its spin-offs).

If I can think of some more tidbits, I'll let you all know.
