Is it true that the last episode isn't about the main characters? Like the cast is there but they switch time to the 1800's so they are different characters. Also what happens in the 1897 storyline? They sure do like to go back in the past a lot.

Yea the last storylien which lasted for around 40 something episodes took place in the parellel time 1800s. Jonathan Frid got tired of Barnabas and in 1970 when he renewed his contract he told them he would leave the show if he didn't get a new character. So in the January-April 1971 storyline he plays Bramwell. The 1897 storyline I really don't know that much about.

Nope. The last time they skipped episodes was summer 2001 I think. They had just gotten back to the beginning of the series and I guess were trying to get to the supernatural episodes faster.

They all rae in a way, but in the first 100 or so episodes whenever someone saw a ghost they were told thety wre seeing things. The first 100 really centered on the Burke Devlin manslaughter case and Vicki trying to find out aobut her past.

For some of the episodes, the original color masters are missing and have been replaced by B&W kinescopes. In the '60s, some stations would air a newshow in the place of DS and other soap operas. So instead of having the show not being shown in the market, the station would make B&W kinescopes of the episode and air them later in the day. They stopped doing this for all the soap operas (at least on ABC) in 1970. Unfortunately, one of the episodes (#1219) from 1971 is completely lost. A audio tape was discovered though (a fan of the show had their mom tape the show on cassettes while she was at school) and they reconstructed that episode. Bits of audio would play along with a narration by Lara Parker as still pictures of the characters in custume were shown.

I know there are a few in the 1897 storyline, but I do not know if there are any others. Most of the missing episodes are from the early color episodes. Also, a few B&W episodes are kinescoped but it's not as noticeable (It is noticeable though, the kinescopes look different from the regular B&W episodes.) The first episode with Jonathan Frid is a kinescope.

Here is a little thing from the MPI Home Video site (they are the people who release DS on tape/DVD):

Quote:
Kinescopes are simply copies of a program which are filmed off of a television monitor. The method was conceived in the early days of television, before videotape was invented, as a method to preserve shows that were broadcast live. Although videotape became available in the late 1950s, the television networks continued to simultaneously make kinescopes of shows that were presented live or originated on videotape. Although vastly inferior in quality to video, kinescopes were still made in the mid-1960s because various stations across the country did not always telecast certain shows at the exact time that the network would transmit them. Since some stations did not yet have the expensive videotape equipment needed to record a program for a later playback, the network would provide filmed kinescope copies within days of the original broadcast.

By the fall of 1970, the kinescope process had become outdated, and ABC ceased making them for Dark Shadows.

Fortunately, the kinescope negatives for Dark Shadows were preserved along with the videotape masters. In the years since the episodes first aired on ABC, some of the videotape masters have been lost or damaged. Therefore, when the series is shown in reruns and on home video, filmed kinescope prints are used for several of the episodes. These episodes are now seen only in black and white, even after the series went to color.

Episodes 509, 683, 797, 801/802, 805 and 813 were skipped in the 1975-1990 syndication package. This was because the syndicator, Worldvision Enterprises, did not realize that kinescopes for these shows were available. One of the shows, Episode 805, had not been rerun because the master tape was ripped.

Black and white kinescope negatives were found for Episodes 509, 683, 797 and 813. In addition, the color videotape master for Episode 801/802 was located, and the damaged color tape for Episode 805 was salvaged by inserting sepia-tinted kinescope footage for the brief segment that was damaged on the tape master.

During this extensive search, the copies of two other syndicated episodes were upgraded for home video. A Spanish videotape copy was found of Episode 289, which had been rerun only in kinescope form. The English kinescope audio was merged with the Spanish video for a greatly enhanced picture.

Also, a color videotape master was found for Episode 367, which had previously been rerun in kinescope form.
Episode 805 is now aired in color btw, but one part (the part that was ripped on the master) was colorized to fit in with the rest of the episodes. In the B&W kinescopes, sometimes theya rej ust damaged. In this case, it will actually be a mix of a normal episode and a kinescope. I recently watched an episode. Scene one was normal. Scene two was a kinescope. Scene three was normal. Scene Four was a kinescope. This is because Scenes Two & Four were damaged while scenes One & Three were not.

A list of some of the kinescoped episodes:

#120
#127
#145
#211
#260
#296
#300
#318
#320
#323
#325
#335
#341
#344
#351
#352
#368/9
#438
#509
#683
#797
#813

There are some more, but those are the ones I could think of at this moment.

The Haunting of Quentin and Beth (aka Devil Tots) ends when Barnabas travels back in time to the year 1897.
