My goal is to watch Seasons 1-5. I'm halfway through Season 2 and I've just noticed a pattern with the Walton's family. Sometimes when a child or teenager gets in trouble the parents or grandparents make them learn verses of the Bible or read them aloud until they say stop. (The Carnival, The Dust Bowl Cousins and The Fulfillment.)
I know this was probably a thing passed from generation to generation in their family tree because the Waltons and Dalys had a history of fundamentalists. I'm sure they meant well but did Olivia and Esther ever think that through? They want their kids to be Christians when they grow up, yet whenever the grown-up kid sees that Bible on the table, they'll associate it with punishment and spiritual abuse and that will immediately turn them off. So, if one of them grows up to be dissolute, Olivia will say "How did I fail him/her? Oh yeah! So THAT'S why they turned away from God!" Why not just say "No radio for a week." or "No desert for a week." or "No playing after school for a week. Come straight home and stay in your room." Or just go out to the woodshed like everyone else in that time? |

By the time childhood is over, you would know the whole bible. It was an odd thing to do.
