1975 - A magic year in sitcoms? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I've become personally convinced that in 1975 all the planets must have lined up and sitcoms reached some sort of creative pinnacle. Look what shows were ALL on in 1975:

1. The Mary Tyler Moore Show
2. M*A*S*H
3. The Bob Newhart Show
4. Barney Miller
5. All In the Family
6. The Odd Couple

Most TV critics generally consider these shows to be some of the best if not THE best sitcoms in history (with due respect to all those other great shows). I have my own opinions too and of course you will have yours but...

I just thought it was interesting.

My favourite year for sitcoms happened to be one full decade earlier---1965. What made that season special was that there were many great sitcoms that were ending their run while other future classics were just starting. I couldn't think of another season where there was not only a great amount of quality sitcoms, but also a greater quantity of them. Here's what you might find on a typical week:

Sunday:

My Favourite Martian

Monday:

The Lucy Show
Andy Griffith

Tuesday:

McHale's Navy (Last Season)
F Troop
Petticoat Junction

Wednesday:

Ozzie and Harriet (Last Season)
Gidget (Only Season)
Beverly Hillbillies
Green Acres (First Season)
Dick Van Dyke (Last Season)

Thursday:

Donna Reed (Last Season)
Bewitched
The Munsters (2nd and last season)
Gilligan's Island
My Three Sons
Hogan's Heroes (First season)
Gomer Pyle USMC

Now there's a great Thursday night of Must See TV!

Friday:

The Flintstones (Last season)
The Addams Family (2nd and last season)

Saturday:

I Dream Of Jeannie (First Season)
Get Smart (First Season)

That makes at least one great sitcom on for every night of the week on all 3 networks! How many years can you say that about? It's sure a far cry from the 2002-03 fall line-up that's for sure. I can honestly say that it doesn't get any better than this!

Are you reffering to the CBS Saturday 1970's line-up? Because ABC and NBC has some great sitcoms in the same era.

Right, this isn't a classroom. SOLOMON, again, the original topic of this thread was, shows that were ON, not created, in 1975.

That was my fault-i didn't pay close attention to the list-I saw Barney Miller on the list and thought it was for shows that started in 75

Yes, I agree. I think the '60s were the high point for situation comedies. So many great ones to watch. And quite a few were on at the same times. I wouldn't know what to watch in some cases.

The '70s were the cop decade. Probably '75 had the most cop shows... Starsky & Hutch, Adam-12, Police Woman, SWAT, The Rookies, Kojak, etc.
